Australian-born rock music legend and soap star Rick Springfield has been talking about becoming an American citizen and why he chose to do so.
Springfield, 76, was born in Guildford, New South Wales, in 1949. However, he became a U.S. citizen 20 years ago, in 2006.
In a recent chat with People, the “Jessie’s Girl” singer and “General Hospital” actor explained why he chose to do that.
Rick Springfield Loves the United States of America
GettyThe iconic Rick Springfield became a U.S. citizen in 2006 for several practical reasons, such as taxes, marriage, and power of attorney โ but also notably because he simply loves America.
He told People, initially joking, “Oh, I wanted to be on jury duty. I heard it was so much fun and such a kick that I just, I said, ‘I gotta do this!'”
Springfield then got serious and said, “Honestly, it was for reasons like if I die first, my wife will be able to make financial decisions.”
The star then elaborated, “My friends are here, my family’s here. I do have some cousins back in Australia, but, you know, this is where my life is, and I love this place.”
He concluded, “I love the country. I mean, honestly I wouldn’t have done if I didn’t love America.”
They all seem like perfectly valid reasons to become a U.S. citizen. Given that the America people love Springfield as much as he loves their country, it’s a match made in red, white, and blue heaven.
