Manifesters get ready, because there’s another bumpy arrival on the way. Netflix has announced that the fan-favorite mystery drama, “Manifest,” has a spinoff on the way. The announcement was made on 828 Day, which fans know is especially important.
In fact, the news was made official at 8:28 a.m. PT on 8/28. The date connects to the flight number of the original flight, 828, which continued to become a more important number as the series went on. Whenever Netflix made announcements after it saved the series, they landed on this fateful day.
Netflix Announces ‘Manifest’ Spinoff ‘Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery’
GettyThe new series is called “Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery,” shortened to “Arrivals,” and comes from the original series creator, Jeff Rake. It will follow a new cast of characters and a whole new mystery, and yes, this one is very different from the time-traveling plane.
Instead of time travel, “Arrivals” will involve memory loss. A mysterious plane crash-landing in Denver is already enough to raise questions, but when the passengers emerge with no memories at all, it leads to many more conspiracies and thoughts. These passengers don’t know where they came from or where they are now. And they don’t even know who they are.
Of course, it means some sort of humanity-ending catastrophe that they’ll need to work together to stop, which is sometimes similar to the original “Manifest” series. They’ll find themselves as part of the puzzle, and they’ll have a novice Homeland Security agent and a social worker join them in the investigation.
Will the Original ‘Manifest’ Characters Return?
GettyWhile there is a lot of buzz around the new series, there is one major question from “Manifest” fans. That is whether any of the original characters will appear.
At this time, “Arrivals” is set to have a whole new cast. That doesn’t rule out original characters returning. The end of the four-season story brought closure for many, with the characters being able to return to their first timeline. They still remember everything that happened to them when their plane went through the lightning and landed five-and-a-half years in the future, so it’s possible that one or more could return to help with the new mystery. It could be something similar to the way “Final Destination 2” brought back Clear for a small role to help the new characters deal with death coming after them.
However, for now, the show is set to bring new characters and a new central mystery. The series has been in development for some time, with an idea starting at the end of 2024 and then a writers’ room opening at the end of 2025. Casting details aren’t known, and there is no release date slated as of yet.
One thing Rake told Netflix Tudum was that “We’ve tried to thread the needle in a way that’s rewarding for the OG Manifest fans, but also equally rewarding for people who are brand new to the show.”
It makes sense for Netflix to greenlight the new project. Since 2023, when “Manifest” first landed on Netflix after its cancellation by NBC after three seasons, the show has amassed 130 million views. Due to the initial global response, Netflix stepped in to save the show so that Rake would get time to wrap up the mystery for fans. That mystery wrapped in two parts of a fourth season, with mixed reviews. However, the “Manifest” phenomenon lives on, and now the universe is about to expand.
