After initially finding success with “Gossip Girl” and then taking on the iconic role of Joe Goldberg on “You” on Netflix, eyes have been on the next project Penn Badgley will star in. Sure, there’s a new rom-com coming up on Prime Video, but what about a TV series where he gets to show off his darker acting skills?
“You” fans will be happy to hear there’s something in the works. Deadline states that he will star in “Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone,” a dark comedy murder mystery that is also set to air on Prime Video.
Who Will Penn Badgley Play on ‘Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone?”
GettyThe series is based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Stevenson. It follows a family where, just as the title suggests, everyone has killed a person. Some of those have been murder, but some have been accidental — the circumstances don’t take from the true fact.
Well, there’s a murder mystery about to take place. Badgley will play Ern Cunningham, a mystery-writing expert who has to attend a family reunion. He doesn’t really want to, but it’s to welcome his brother, Michael, home from prison. There’s sure to be some animosity there, as Ern was the one to help convict Michael and send him to prison in the first place.
Then a frozen body appears, and then a snowstorm hits. Suddenly, everyone starts dropping like flies, and as the deaths mount up, Ern and the survivors need to figure out who they can trust. The problem is that when everyone has killed someone, whether intentionally or not, just how can you trust if they’re striking again?
The series is based on the first book in Stevenson’s “Ernest Cunningham Mysteries” collection. The first novel was published in 2022 and became an immediate hit, and Stevenson is now working on the fifth in the series.
With the series only just picked up, there is no release date set. At this point, Amazon is likely looking at its 2028 calendar.
Peter Friedland, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, shared his excitement for the project, saying, “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone is a brilliantly inventive series that subverts the murder mystery genre in the most unexpected and entertaining ways. Ben created a world that is darkly funny and wickedly clever.”
What to Watch Penn Badgley in First
GettyBefore “Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone” is released, Badgley will star in a rom-com from Amazon MGM Studios, which will also be released on Prime Video. He stars as Nicholas Rose opposite Meghann Fahy as Naomi Westfield in “You Deserve Each Other,” another adaptation.
Based on Sarah Hogle’s novel of the same name, the movie will follow a couple who get cold feet just ahead of their wedding day. Rather than walk away, they decide to goad each other into canceling the wedding, leading to a humorous look at how just perfect they are for each other.
There isn’t a release date for the Prime Video movie just yet, but filming has already taken place. It looks like Amazon is looking at an early 2027 release date.
He also has a thriller coming up, titled “NDA,” from Bleecker Street, which will also star Rachel Zegler. No timeline has been given about that just yet.
