Netflix Sets Premiere for Neil Patrick Harris’ New Game Show ‘What’s in the Box?’

Netflix will debut a new competition series titled “What’s in the Box?” on Dec. 17, giving viewers a holiday-season binge that blends trivia, strategy, and unpredictable reveals. The streamer announced the premiere in early November and confirmed that all six episodes will debut on the same day, as reported by Deadline. The series features actor and entertainer Neil Patrick Harris in the role of host.

The series centers on a deceptively simple premise: contestants must determine what is hidden inside large, sealed boxes. However, the game is designed to test more than intuition or luck. According to TV Insider, contestants compete in pairs and move through timed trivia rounds that help them unlock clues about the contents inside each box. The format also introduces strategic decisions that can change the course of the game, which creates tension throughout the competition.

Harris Brings Experience to Hosting Role

Harris steps into the project with experience in front of the camera and a background in hosting. He previously led NBC’s “Best Time Ever” and “Genius Junior,” and he has a long history of engaging live audiences through award shows and stage performances. Speaking with Parade, Harris described the new series as energetic and fast-paced, with moments designed to surprise both contestants and viewers.

He told the outlet that the show appealed to him because it mixes high-pressure decision-making with the fun of a reveal. Harris also noted that he has always enjoyed puzzles and games, which made the format a natural fit.

Format Balances Trivia and High-Stakes Choices

“What’s in the Box?” takes place in a warehouse-style set filled with towering, color-coded boxes. As Deadline reported, each round gives contestants the chance to gain or risk money based on their guesses. Some boxes contain large cash prizes or luxury items. Others introduce twists that can alter alliances, remove winnings, or send competitors back to zero.

Netflix said in its announcement that the show aims to combine intelligence, instinct, and stamina rather than rely entirely on luck. Rollercoaster Television, a division of ITV Studios, produces the series. James Fox, Dom Waugh, Wes Kauble, and Leanne Witcoop serve as executive producers.

Early previews have suggested the show has strong potential. Polygon highlighted the premise as a blend of game-show familiarity and modern streaming sensibility that could engage fans who enjoy formats built around suspense and strategy.

A Big Swing for Netflix’s Unscripted Slate

The series expands Netflix’s growing slate of reality and unscripted competition shows. The lineup already includes “The Circle,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and “Is It Cake.” With Harris at the center and a format built around escalating stakes, “What’s in the Box?” may become the platform’s next breakout game show.
