‘Stranger Things’ Actor Reflects on Their Character’s Final Ending

Now that “Stranger Things” has officially aired its series finale, actor Natalia Dyer is reflecting on what it meant to say goodbye to Nancy Wheeler after nearly a decade with the character.

In an interview with Deadline following the release of Season 5 on Dec. 31, 2025, Dyer opened up about the emotional weight of the ending and the choices that shaped Nancy’s final chapter. While the show delivered large-scale spectacle in its final moments, Dyer said the heart of the finale rested in staying true to who Nancy had become.

Since the series premiered in 2016, Nancy Wheeler has evolved from a determined high school student into one of the show’s most fearless and grounded figures. As Hawkins faced increasingly dangerous supernatural threats, Nancy remained driven by logic, investigation, and moral clarity. With the final episode now behind viewers, Dyer said honoring that evolution mattered more than offering an easy or expected resolution.

Season 5 marked the end of Netflix’s flagship series, closing out one of the platform’s most successful and influential originals.

Advocating for Nancy’s Future

Speaking with Deadline, Dyer revealed that she played an active role in conversations about how Nancy’s story should conclude. One possible outcome, she said, never felt right.

“I just could not see her going back to school,” Dyer told Deadline. After everything Nancy experienced over five seasons, Dyer believed returning to a classroom would contradict the independence and confidence the character developed.

Dyer said she shared her perspective with the show’s creators and felt relief once she read the final version of the script. The ending, she said, aligned with Nancy’s growth and avoided forcing her into a conventional post-series future.

Throughout the show, Nancy consistently challenged authority, pursued the truth, and placed herself in danger to protect others. Dyer said the finale respects that identity and allows Nancy to move forward without undoing the lessons she learned along the way.

Closing Emotional Chapters

The final season also resolved long-standing emotional arcs, including Nancy’s relationship with Jonathan Byers. Dyer told Deadline that their breakup scene felt necessary and emotionally honest.

Rather than leaning on nostalgia, the moment acknowledged how much both characters had changed since the early seasons. Dyer described the scene as satisfying because it allowed the characters to accept that growth does not always lead people in the same direction.

Despite the heightened stakes and expansive action of the final season, Dyer said the show never lost sight of its character-driven foundation. She described watching the completed finale with the cast as surreal, noting that seeing the ending on a big screen underscored the magnitude of the journey they shared.

For fans who followed Nancy Wheeler from the beginning, the ending offers closure without confinement. It suggests a future defined by choice, ambition, and self-trust rather than familiarity.
