Fans of “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” won’t have to wait long for the 2026 animated film to make it to Netflix. The hit sequel, which stars the likes of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, and Jack Black, is due to become available on the streaming service later this year. In fact, the exact date has been confirmed as November 30, with the movie becoming available to users in the United States from that date.
That means that viewers will be able to watch the movie from the comfort of their homes throughout the holiday season. First hitting cinema screens in April, it became the first release to cross the $1 billion mark this year and sees Mario, Luigi, and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom crew as they venture into space to once again battle Bowser and his son Bowser Jr.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has already been available to stream via Peacock in July. It has also been available to buy or rent online, but a distribution deal with Universal means Netflix users will also get access to the film in just a few months time – although it will only be available for a short time.
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Comes to Netflix in November For A Limited Time
According to Men’s Journal, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” will launch on Netflix in the U.S. on November 30. Plans for other territories are not yet clear, but it is likely to also be available in other markets around the same time.
However, fans will have to hurry if they want to take advantage of it being available on the highly popular streaming service. A complicated licensing agreement between Netflix and Universal means that it will only be available on the streamer for a short amount of time. Following a four-month period of exclusivity on Peacock, Illumination’s animated movies then head to Netflix for 10 months before returning to Peacock.
That means that viewers will only be able to watch “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” up until September 2027 on Netflix. After this time, it will only be available to stream on Peacock. This follows the previous streaming journey of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in 2023.
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Became a $1 Billion Hit & More Releases Could Be Coming
While movie adaptations of video games haven’t always been successful, the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise has been incredibly successful for Nintendo and Universal. The first film garnered a positive critical reception and grossed more than $1.3 billion at the box office, making a sequel a certainty.
Despite coming just three years later, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has been similarly successful, reaching a current box office gross of over $1 billion. It features much of the same cast alongside notable newcomers such as Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
The story also expands the world established in its predecessor significantly. This time around, Mario and his gang travel across the galaxy in a quest to save Princess Rosalina from Bowser Jr., who is attempting to avenge his father’s defeat from the first movie.
There have also been several reports over the last few months indicating that Illumination may be collaborating with Nintendo on more adaptations in the future. There are talks of a third film in the “Super Mario Bros.” series as well as a spin-off focusing on Donkey Kong.
