Former FBI Agents Say Savannah Guthrie’s Brave Video Reveals Alarming Details About Search for Her Mom

The heartbreaking video that “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie posted to social media on the evening of February 4, 2026, reveals key details about the ongoing search for her mom, Nancy Guthrie, experts say. A manhunt has been underway since the 84-year-old resident of Tucson, Arizona, disappeared from her home of over 50 years overnight on February 1.

Tracy Walder, a former CIA officer and FBI agent who appears frequently on NewsNation as one of its national security contributors, posted on social media shortly after Savannah and her siblings — sister Annie and brother Camron — released what she called a “heavily scripted” video, noting that it was clearly at the direction of authorities they’re working with. The message they sent, Walder said, revealed some chilling details about what they know and are looking for.

Tracy Walder Says Savannah Guthrie’s Family is Asking For ‘Proof of Life’

In the video Savannah posted to her social media accounts, she cried while reading from her notes, thanking the public for praying for her mom’s safe return and insisting that her family “will not rest” until they’re reunited. Walder said that although the family’s video is very emotional and they talk about what they love about their mom, every line was very intentional, including them “humanizing her” with their heartfelt reflections.

“Mark my words, this video … was heavily scripted,” Walder said. “They are reading off of scripts. That’s good. They should be. The FBI has very specific things that they want them to say.”

At one point in the video, Savannah said, “We too, have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media. As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive.”

Walder explained that Savannah’s statement is a request for “proof of life.” The wording, Walder said, makes her think they’ve already received possible evidence that their mom is still alive.

“It sounds to me that they have been receiving images of Nancy Guthrie or videos of Nancy Guthrie, probably throughout the entirety of this ordeal,” Walder said. “They just have not told us about it. But
they can’t confirm if those are AI-generated or not, which everyone knows so many things can be. So they are asking for real proof of life in that video.”

There had been speculation by some about the FBI investigating Annie’s home after many agents appeared there. But Walder explained, “I suspect the reason that we saw a flurry of FBI agents at Annie Guthrie’s house today, Savannah Guthrie’s sister, is because they were making this video.”

Savannah Guthrie’s Statement May Explain Why Certain Investigative Units Have Been Brought In

Savannah’s plea for “proof of life,” Walder said in her video, helps to explain why the media has seen certain FBI investigative units brought in to help with the investigation.

“ICAC is involved, and that is their Internet Crimes Against Children division,” Walder said. “And I understand that Nancy Guthrie is not a child, but one of the things that they do specialize in is internet- based exploitation. Obviously, we see a lot in regards to children, and so they are excellent at it.”

“I am assuming, if those ransom notes were sent, they were probably sent from burner emails, VPNs were used in cryptic communications,” Walder continued. “But they’re very good at doing that, and they’re very good at working with these sort of online kidnapping cases, or even some of the hoax cases. That is what they do.”

Walder theorized that “Nancy Guthrie was probably stalked for some time,” as her abductors established “a pattern of life, determining how she lives her life.”

Former FBI Deputy Director Believes Savannah Guthrie’s Family is Trying to Establish Communication With Abductors

Shortly after Savannah’s video was released, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe told CNN that the family’s plea means that although they may have received ransom notes via the media — sent to a local Arizona station and TMZ — Nancy’s abductors may not have had direct communication with the family yet.

“To me, it reads like an effort to establish some sort of communication,” McCabe said late on February 4. “We don’t know this for sure, but I feel this is a fairly strong signal they don’t believe they’ve had a legitimate ransom demand yet.”

He continued, “What you hear the family saying is, ‘We’re ready to talk, reach out to us, we just want to know you have our mother.’ That’s not something that you would do if already in negotiations with someone that you actually thought had the victim.”

Like Walder, McCabe said asking for proof of life is important because, “in these situations, you get a lot of false leads, you get a lot of scammers, you get a lot of people trying to take advantage of a horrible situation — which is unthinkable, but it does happen.”

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
