Anthony Geary’s husband, Claudio Gama, confirmed the death of the legendary soap opera star. Geary, best known for playing Luke Spencer on “General Hospital,” died on December 14 at the age of 78.
The eight-time Daytime Emmy Award winner passed away due to complications from an operation three days earlier, according to Gama. As fans reflect on Geary’s impact on daytime television, many are also learning more about the partner who shared his life away from the spotlight for decades.
Anthony Geary’s Husband Confirms His Death
Gama confirmed Geary’s death in a statement to TV Insider, describing the loss as sudden and devastating for those closest to the actor. The couple had been together for more than 30 years, building a life largely outside Hollywood.
“It was a shock for me and our families and our friends,” Gama said. “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
Geary retired from acting in 2015 after more than four decades on “General Hospital,” a role that made him one of the most recognizable figures in soap opera history. After retiring, he and Gama relocated to Amsterdam full-time.
The move marked a clear shift away from fame and toward personal fulfillment, something Geary had spoken about for years before stepping away from the show.
Anthony Geary’s Life in Amsterdam With Claudio Gama
Geary often described his life in Amsterdam as the chapter that finally brought him peace. In a 2003 interview with Soap Opera Digest, he explained how his priorities had changed as his career slowed.
“I live in the city that I’ve always wanted to live in my whole life and I have somebody who loves me and I have a life now, that I didn’t have before,” Geary said. “No matter how many fan letters or Emmys or how many pages of dialogue to learn, I didn’t have what I have now. So, everything happened at the right time, I guess.”
Gama and Geary kept their relationship relatively private, but in one post, Gama shared exactly how long they had been together and how long they had been married.
“Greetings and happy week to all from Amsterdam winter days it’s cold but dry this week is our anniversary week Tony and I met 30 years ago in February and got married 6 years ago also on February two anniversary’s to celebrate I have to find a good gift and make some special food maybe bake another cake that will make Tony from me Tony and Max stay safe and warm,” Gama posted at the time.
Gama frequently shared moments from their everyday life on Instagram, posting updates about travel, time at home, and their cat. While Gama occasionally referenced going to “work,” he never publicly detailed his profession.
His final post featuring Geary, shared on December 5, offered a snapshot of a typical day in Amsterdam. “Greetings from us in Amsterdam it’s Sinterklaas today in the Netherlands the kids get gifts and we give chocolate letters to each other I did some work now home with Max watching UK championships snooker Tony went to see Wicked 2 with his best mate tonight no cooking going to a restaurant with Hugo weekend free have a warm healthy and safe Friday and weekend,” Gama wrote.
