This ‘Survivor’ 49 Contestant Will Miss Baby’s Birth to Play the Game

The new season of “Survivor” is once again putting ordinary people into extraordinary circumstances — and for one Canadian contestant, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Thirty-five-year-old Jake Latimer enters the game for “Survivor” 49 with a story shaped by family, loyalty, and personal perseverance. A correctional officer from Alberta, Latimer has lived a life built on service, whether mentoring troubled youth before his law enforcement career or running Special Olympics programs in his community.

“Survivor” has also been part of his life for decades. He grew up watching the show with his parents and younger brother, a family ritual that made the dream of competing one of his earliest goals. Now that dream is real, and it comes at a pivotal moment in his family’s life. His father is battling glaucoma and is expected to lose his eyesight completely by the end of the year, making this the last season he will ever see. That motivation alone would have been enough to get Latimer out to the island. But in his case, it came with a personal cost.

Jake Latimer Reveals Sacrifice Of Missing His Son’s Birth

In pre-season interviews with Parade, Latimer revealed that while he was preparing for “Survivor”, his wife learned she was pregnant with their first child after years of trying. It was joyful news, but the timing meant he would have to choose between a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play the game and being at home for his son’s arrival.

“I’ve already cried about it,” he admitted. “We tried for four and a half years, and when it finally happened, I knew I’d be missing the birth. But my wife said, ‘Go do it. You’ll have a brand-new baby boy waiting for you when you get home. He’s not going anywhere. Bring it home.’”

The decision weighed heavily on Latimer, but he says he ultimately chose to compete both for his father, who wanted to see him on television before losing his vision, and for his wife and son, believing the sacrifice could be worth it if he comes back with the prize money.

Survivor 49 Brings Added Pressure For Jake Latimer

Latimer describes himself as loyal, honest, and nurturing — traits he believes will help him bond quickly with other castaways. He also recognizes the game demands backstabbing and betrayal, even for players who prefer to lead with heart. A lifelong athlete who once played professional hockey in Australia, he believes his physical strength and competitive drive will give him an advantage. But he admits his kindness could be his kryptonite.

“I’m Canadian — I’m too nice,” he joked. “Writing someone’s name down and taking their dream away doesn’t sit well with me. But this is Survivor. You’ve got to remind yourself it’s a game.”

As the only Alberta native to ever compete, Latimer is carrying the weight of his province — and of his entire family — into the competition. With a blind father watching from home and a newborn son waiting to meet him, his “Survivor” journey is already one of the most personal in the show’s history.
