The Royal Family Members Described at ‘Bonnie and Clyde’: Author

Two members of the royal family have been described as “Bonnie and Clyde” by a royal author.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson were given the nickname by writer Andrew Lownie, author of the book “Entitled.” The author used the comparison to highlight the pair’s turbulent years in the public eye.

The Nickname a Royal Author Felt Suited the Former Duke and Duchess of York

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson wed on July 23, 1986. They remained married for 10 years before officially divorcing in 1996. The couple welcomed two daughters during their marriage, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Author Andrew Lownie’s book “Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York” explored the former couple’s relationship in detail. The author told Fox News Digital he believes Andrew and Sarah’s union wasn’t all it appeared on the surface.

“The reason that they’ve stayed together is a professional business relationship,” Lownie claimed. “I describe them as Bonnie and Clyde.”

“He had a sentimental loyalty to her. She, of course, was one of the last people to remain loyal to him and supportive of him. And I think he felt grateful for that,” Lownie concluded.

However, despite their loyalty to one another, Mountbatten-Windsor and Ferguson never resumed a romantic relationship, preferring to focus on parenting their daughters and being a part of their lives as they married and began families of their own.

After splitting in 1996, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson continued to live together in the same home. The couple resided in the royal lodge until February 2026, when they vacated the property.

Lownie claimed the unconventional living arrangement worked because “they lived in a very big house, so they were at opposite ends.” He claimed, “They were more business partners than a couple.”

The couple raised their children, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, together. The author believed this living arrangement benefited their daughters by allowing both parents to remain active in their day-to-day lives.

Ferguson told The Telegraph, as reprinted by Hello!, “We always say we are the most contented divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other.”

“We are co-parents who support each other and believe that family is everything. I’m proud of the job we have done together in bringing up our children and sustaining a strong family unit. Our bywords are communication, compromise, and compassion.”

Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor no longer use the royal titles bestowed upon them by Queen Elizabeth on their wedding day.

Due to his connection to disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein, Mountbatten-Windsor released a statement in October 2025 which stated he would no longer use his title or any honors he had received while a working royal.

It read, per PEOPLE, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”

“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me,” he continued. “As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

Additionally, it was revealed that Sarah Ferguson would no longer use her title of Duchess of York. She goes by Sarah Ferguson both privately and professionally.
