Did Leland Coulter Suffer a Heart Attack in ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 13?

When Calls the Heart” ramped up its season 13 storyline during episode 5 by putting Leland Coulter’s health at risk.

With pressure to rebuild Benson Hills, Leland, played by actor Kavan Smith, has officially launched his new construction business. But when he was going over plans with Rosemary, a long, blank stare came over his face. As the room filled with silence, Rosemary immediately knew something was gravely wrong and rushed him to the hospital.

While at the hospital, the prognosis on Leland’s condition was revealed. The doctor determined that Leland did not have a heart attack and instead suffered from a variation of an anxiety attack.

The doctor told him to get rest and “listen” to what his body was telling him when it went into shut-down mode.

When Leland and Rosemary returned home from the hospital, Gwendolyn and the couple’s young daughter, Lily, rushed to welcome him back in good health. Although the doctor suggested much-needed downtime, Leland did the exact opposite.

Since the investigation of how the wildfire started is still ongoing after mysterious fossils were found on the land where Goldie National Park once stood, Cooper and Toby came up with the idea of planting trees to restore what they believe they ruined.

When Leland hears of their efforts, he uses saplings in the reforestation. Many of the people from Hope Valley and Benson Hills join him in planting the trees, hoping that in no time, the ruins will be restored.

Fortunately, Leland’s health continues to be in good standing by the end of the episode. He even impressed Gwendolyn, who is staying with him and Rosemary while her father is nursed back to health after injuries from the fire. When Gwendolyn showed him a hand-drawn photo of her house that burned down, Leland assured her that he will do everything he can do to rebuild it exactly the way it was before.

During episode 5, Leland also explained how his construction business isn’t just for the “recovery” of Benson Hills — it’s also for his personal recovery, giving him even more motivation to get the job done for the misplaced people of Benson Hills.

With Leland’s health appearing to be in good condition after his anxiety attack, he’ll now be able to really break ground on rebuilding Benson Hills — especially since his construction project was officially approved.
