After Cooper and Toby confessed to the people of Hope Valley in episode 4 that they started the fire, the two young students were quickly forgiven — even by those of Benson Hills. HallmarkEpisode 5 began with Little Jack and Elizabeth walking to school. Little Jack, growing quickly, asks his mom if he could be called “LJ” instead.
Rosemary is finally making headway with Gwendolyn after she gave her a pair of overalls for school, prompting a “thanks” from the young girl.
Nathan’s parenting skills are tested when Allie talks to him about Oliver, leading him to question her about the wolf brooch that Oliver gifted her. Allie scurries away from the conversation after looking uncomfortable about the topic.
Elizabeth has her students split into their reading groups as Cooper and Toby show up to class late with a mysterious amount of dirt on their shoes.
Leland pitches his new construction business to Hope Valley officials, telling them that his new project is not only for the recovery of Benson Hills – it’s for his personal recovery as well.
During the investigation of the wildfire, Oliver finds a fossil on the site where the fire ignited, leading Nathan and Bill to do some digging on the land. Nathan finds new evidence that could point to what really caused the wildfire.
Lucas and Edie are finally on the mend and have planned to spend time together after he missed his previous plans with her.
Nathan and Bill are unsure of the peculiar material they found on the ground – but they are starting to believe that Cooper and Toby may not have started the fire during their hike.
Allie & Oliver’s Relationship Reaches New Heights
HallmarkThings heat up with Oliver and Allie when they have alone time during Oliver’s work break. Allie recalls a funny story from her childhood, making Oliver feel more at ease. Nathan shows up on his horse, leading Allie to jump to her feet. Before she walks away, she asks Oliver to meet her at a later time.
Nathan takes Oliver to the ranch, where he comes down hard on him for being responsible for other people as a new mountie. Nathan gives him a crash course on being “worthy” enough to have the trust of Hope Valley. Reading between the lines, Oliver realizes Nathan isn’t just talking about Hope Valley – he’s also talking about his daughter.
Elizabeth follows Cooper and Toby after wondering why they were late to class. She finds them planting trees to restore the ground where the fire ravaged through the land.
Leland finally lands his contract to rebuild Benson Hills. Gwendolyn and Rosemary rejoice as he tells them the good news. Gwendolyn presents them with a hand-drawn photo of her home that burned down, which Leland promises to rebuild just the way it stood before.
Allie asks Elizabeth for her help to show Oliver she deeply cares about him. Elizabeth tells her that she has helped to “inspire” Oliver just by being herself. Allie and Elizabeth hug after they share how thankful they are to have each other.
Allie’s plans with Oliver get derailed when Bill joins them to sift through the mysterious fossils where the fire erupted. When Elizabeth tells Nathan that Allie went fossil hunting, he tells her that he thinks Allie has been spending too much time with Oliver.
Lucas & Edie’s Relationship Raises Eyebrows in Town
HallmarkLucas and Edie start to raise eyebrows when they are seen carrying a piece of furniture through the town of Hope Valley. Molly takes notice, pointing out their rare exchange. Edie tells Lucas that she’s “impressed” by him declaring his reelection for governor. As they carry the furniture up the stairs, it falls, nearly crushing Lucas.
When Allie finally gets home, Nathan raises his voice, telling her that she needs to be where she says she will be at the time she’s supposed to be there. Nathan goes to talk with Elizabeth about how he regrets his angry tone with Allie. Elizabeth reassures him that it will be OK as long as he remembers that Oliver truly cares for her.
Leland’s Health Takes a Turn for the Worse
HallmarkLeland talks to Rosemary about his construction plans for Benson Hills… that is, until he begins to suffer from what appears to be a heart attack. Rosemary rushes him to the clinic.
Nathan finally sits down with Allie to talk to her about how “painful” love can be, telling her that she still has plenty of time to explore. She tells him that she will “always” come back home, leading Nathan to tell her that he will “always” be there waiting for her.
Elizabeth asks her students if they want to help her “plant the future.” Some students are hesitant at first but ultimately agree to help plant new trees on the burned-down land.
Doctors tell Leland that he thankfully did not suffer from a heart attack. What happened was a form of an anxiety attack. The doctor tells him that he needs to rest and “listen” to his body.
Edie apologizes to Lucas for nearly dropping furniture on his head, leading them to agree to disagree on their previous mishaps. Edie tells Lucas that she secretly stayed in Hope Valley because she likes spending time with him. Lucas invites Edie to work in his office, but she tells him that being around him during work would be too “distracting.”
Leland refuses to follow the doctor’s orders when he gathers in town with the people of Hope Valley, asking them if they want to help plant trees. When the town begins putting down new roots, Nathan finally gives Oliver his stamp of approval.
Before the episode ends, Christopher skips town in a hurry… when his dad, Henry, helps pack his trunk, he finds the mysterious fossils underneath a piece of clothing. Christopher says goodbye before his dad can ask him about it, but now, things are finally starting to make sense.
