“Dancing With the Stars” fans went wild when pro dancer Mark Ballas and his season 34 partner Whitney Leavitt announced they would join forces once again. From April 6 through May 3, the iconic pair planned to star as Billy Flynn and Roxie Hart in “Chicago.”
Sadly, life had different plans.
Whitney stepped away to deal with a viral infection. Shortly after, Mark came down with a similar sickness. After missing several shows, the 39-year-old pushed himself to return to the stage. However, things didn’t quite go according to plan.
Mark Ballas realized he wasn’t quite ready to return to his role as Billy Flynn. Now, he’s issuing a statement and thanking fans for their patience.
Mark Ballas Stopped Performing Mid-Show on April 20
“Chicago” on Broadway has completely dominated the box office since Mark Ballas and Whitney Leavitt joined the cast. But rigorous performance schedules and tight backstage spaces make it difficult to stay healthy.
Mark Ballas desperately wanted to return to his role in the show. But things quickly went awry during the April 20 performance. During the first act, Mark’s voice gave out and he could no longer perform.
“I unfortunately couldn’t make it through the first act,” the DWTS pro shared on Instagram. “I tried my best but I am still recovering and probably should have waited as I am not fully healed & my voice totally went out on me half way through the first song. I apologize profusely to all that came out to see me & this wonderful cast. I am devastated.”
Thankfully, the show is full of talented professionals, so an understudy could step in and finish out the role. But that did little to lift Mark’s spirits. After further evaluation, he believes he pushed himself too hard and returned prematurely.
The Dancer Expresses Disappointment in the Situation & Thanks Fans
Mark Ballas has dedicated his life to the world of performance. He feels absolutely heartbroken that his ongoing health issues have forced him to miss so many shows. Above all else, he hates feeling like he disappointed his fans.
After deciding to step back again, the 39-year-old addressed the situation online and thanked his audience members for their continued support.
“Thank you all for being so patient with me, no one is more disappointed than I am,” Mark began a heartfelt message on his Instagram stories. “I truly appreciate everyone who has reached out and shown support, it means more than you know.”
“I won’t be back in the show tonight. I came back a bit prematurely, and after listening to my doctors, it’s clear I need to take a little more time to recover properly,” the professional dancer continued. “Huge shoutout to @jamestlane for stepping in and holding it down. I can’t wait to be back with you all very soon.”
Fans sincerely hope Mark makes a full recovery and can perform very soon.
Mark Ballas and Whitney Leavitt star in “Chicago” on Broadway now through May 3. “Dancing With the Stars” season 35 arrives on ABC this September.
