‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Costume Designer Molly Rogers Reveals The Character Everyone ‘Fought’ To Dress

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ has been one of the most highly anticipated films of the year – not just for the return of Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in their iconic roles, but also for the enviable ensembles set to appear onscreen.

Molly Rogers, the costume designer of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, opened up about what happened behind the scenes when it came to dressing the stars.

Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep, has gone down in fashion history as the ice-cold, impeccably chic editor of Runway magazine.

However, Streep wasn’t the cast member everyone was clamouring to dress. That honor went to Emily Blunt‘s character, Emily Charlton.

“It’s true; all the shoppers fought about shopping for her,” Rogers revealed to Hello! Magazine. “She was edgier and they really wanted to be able to be more expressive and go to fringe designers.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt recalls wearing “predominantly Rick Owens,” though she also sported “a lot of Westwood.”

“She’s just a heinous person, isn’t she?” she quipped of her character.

“She was a sort of grungy, urban… as Molly liked to call me, her little swamp monster,” she joked. “That’s how Molly referred to me.”

“And I was like, she kind of is a bit swampy in how she dresses,” she admitted. “But quite hard and edgy and impenetrable, you know, and I loved that.”

Rogers On The “Wonderful” and “Knowledgeable” Meryl Streep

Rogers previously worked with stylist Patricia Field on the original ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ film in 2006. She has also worked on television shows ‘And Just Like That’ and ‘Emily in Paris.’

Speaking to Hello!, Rogers said the experience of working on the film was “like lightning has struck twice,” as she “got to see these actors again.”

Rogers stated that “everybody wanted to make [the film] as good as we could.”

“You must try to meet expectations and surpass them,” she said, advice that was given to her by the film’s star Meryl Streep. She revealed that Streep is “wonderful” to work with.

“Meryl is knowledgeable,” she said, sharing a story of a costume item that Streep herself found.

“She came into the room on the first day and was like: ‘Stop the presses, I’ve found the perfect-sized silver hoop for my new hair’ – and it was from CVS, a drugstore.”

Streep also had input into other areas of the costumes, said Rogers.

“She said: ‘We should flip that costume here and put that other costume there,’ and I was like: ‘That’s perfect.'”

Rogers Reveals The “Patron Saint” Designer Of The Film

There was one fashion designer in particular that Rogers wanted to honor in the film.

“Mr [Giorgio] Armani was my patron saint on this one,” she revealed. The late designer was the inspiration behind one of her favorite costumes of the film.

“It was Armani Privé [the designer’s haute couture line],” she said of the look. “I had been looking at it for at least three years, wondering when I was going to get it on someone. He had just died, and we all wanted to put pieces from him in the movie as a little homage to that wonderful man. I know Meryl did, and Annie [Anne Hathaway].”
