Two days after the unexpected death of movie director Jamie Blanks was announced by his family, actress and musician Alicia Witt is still coming to grips with the loss. On March 22, 2026, the Hallmark Channel alum wrote a heartbreaking tribute to Blanks, who died on March 16 at age 54, per the Hollywood Reporter.
Witt posted a social media photo with the cast of Blanks’ horror hit “Urban Legend,” noting that the 1998 pic included herself, Jared Leto, Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart, Josh Jackson, Michael Rosenbaum, producers Michael McDonald and Gina Matthews, and Blanks smiling in the background.
In the caption, Witt wrote, “really sad today to hear the news that urban legend director jamie blanks has passed away suddenly, way too young. i thought we’d see each other again one day – i know he did too. here we all were on the set… 1998.”
‘Urban Legend’ Fandom Mourns With Alicia Witt
Witt has since starred in a wide range of projects, from beloved Hallmark Christmas movies to 2024’s surprise horror blockbuster “Longlegs.” But “Urban Legend” was one of the movies Blanks was best known for.
The movie grossed over $70 million worldwide and inspired two sequels: 2000’s “Urban Legends: Final Cut,” and a 2005 direct-to-video reboot called “Urban Legends: Bloody Mary,” according to The Guardian. Rosenbaum responded to Witt’s post by simply writing, “heartbroken.”
Many fans of the film chimed in, too, including someone who wrote, “Urban Legend is my favorite ‘90s slasher movie. Jamie was a talented director and seemed like a genuinely good guy. RIP ❤️”
Someone else commented, “journey well, Mr. Jamie Banks.🌹Thank you for such a landmark film I like to revisit every October.”
Another fan offered, “My deepest condolences to you guys. Urban Legend is a classic. May Jamie rest in peace. I will watch it tonight to honor him.”
Alicia Witt Sent Her Best to Jamie Blanks’ Family Following Their Statement
In her tribute, Witt wrote a special message for Blanks’ family and friends in his native Melbourne, Australia. She wrote, “sending jamie’s family and loved ones in melbourne so much love and deepest condolences.
The family issued a heartbreaking statement on March 20 to announce Blanks’ passing and shared a three-minute video of his work.
“It is with the deepest sadness that we confirm our beloved Jamie passed away suddenly at his home in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday,” the family wrote. “His death was unexpected, despite some ill health in recent years. and comes at a time when Jamie was preparing to direct another film.”
“He was still very active supporting other filmmakers and developing his own projects,” the statement continued. :Anyone who was lucky to know Jamie was immediately struck by his talent, kindness, humanity, generosity of spirit and boundless enthusiasm for what he did in life but also – so importantly – for the people around him. This big, beautiful heart of his eventually gave way.”
Blanks’ family encouraged fans to watch one of his movies or listening to his music scores in his honor. He is survived his wife, Simone, son, Oliver, his parents and brothers, “and a huge extended family of movie fans around the world, their statement said.
