Famed Horror Director Passes Away at 54 & Tributes Pour In

Fans of horror movies such as “Urban Legend” and “Valentine” are mourning the loss of beloved filmmaker Jamie Blanks, who passed away suddenly at 54. Notably, actors such as Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, and Alicia Witt appeared in his films. Now, fans and colleagues are paying tribute to his legacy.

Blanks’ family confirmed his passing on March 20 with a post on X. They began, “It is with the deepest sadness that we confirm our beloved Jamie passed away suddenly at his home in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday.”

The statement went on to call his passing “unexpected” despite him previously having “some ill health in recent years.” They also stated that he was gearing up to direct another movie. Blanks leaves behind his wife, Simone, a son, and his parents and brother.

His family concluded, “We love you so much, Jamie. Fly high, darling. Forever here in our hearts.”

Social Media Is Honoring Jamie Blanks

Blanks made a real mark on the horror community thanks to “Urban Legend” and “Valentine.” Because of this, many of his fans and those who knew him are taking to social media to honor the beloved filmmaker.

Don Coscarielli said on X, “My dear friend Jamie Blanks passed away this past weekend. While a supremely talented film director, editor, and composer, I knew Jamie as a die-hard horror film fan. He not only created the Urban Legend franchise, but also made significant uncredited creative contributions to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise as well.”

They continued, “We spent many hilarious Halloween nights together in LA, yet when he returned home to Australia, he’d still call every Halloween night with a warm greeting.

Jamie was a virtuoso musician and on Halloween night he would set up a Phantom of the Opera organ on my lawn and as each child approached he could instantly play the theme song of the costume the kids were wearing, to their parent’s delight. A great friend, father, husband, and filmmaker. He will be missed.”

Someone else said, “So sorry to see this. Jamie seemed like a great guy, and he certainly made at least two fantastic slasher films in URBAN LEGEND and VALENTINE. A loss. RIP”

The Slasher Trash account on X also tributed him, saying, “I’m heartbroken to hear the news that Jamie Blanks has passed away. I had been in touch with J since 2021, and this is not hyperbole to say that he was the nicest filmmaker I had ever engaged with. No ego at all.”

They continued, “When I told him that I was a huge fan of URBAN LEGEND and VALENTINE, not only was he ever so grateful, but he’d also fanboy with me over the artists he got to work with – as though he wasn’t even aware that he more than deserved his status – and our mutual love for slashers.”

His Legacy Will Live On

Blanks attended Swinburne Film School and gained experience as a filmmaker by directing several shorts, according to Deadline. After that, he directed the 1998 cult horror film “Urban Legend” for TriStar Pictures. The film, which featured Leto, Jackson, and Witt, went on to gross $72M worldwide.

Deadline also notes that, before directing his debut film, he was in talks to helm “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” after his short films circulated through the industry and received praise.

After “Urban Legend” came “Valentine in 2001. From there, he directed “Storm Warning” in 2007 and “Nature’s Grave” the following year.

Blanks will be missed.
