Following the tragic news of James Van Der Beek’s passing after his cancer battle, many stars have paid tribute to the beloved actor, and that includes Danica McKellar. The Hallmark star left a heartfelt comment on the post announcing Van Der Beek’s death.
“A beautiful soul and unthinkably tragic loss,” she wrote. “Sending prayers of peace to your family as you process this. We are all by your side.”
James Van Der Beek’s Family Releases Heartbreaking Statement
His family shared the news of Van Der Beek’s passing in an emotional Instagram post.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the caption read. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.
“For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Along with McKellar, many others left sweet comments on the post.
“I’m so sad for your beautiful family,” Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote. “While James’ legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world. Fuck Cancer.”

After Van Der Beek lost his battle with cancer that ultimately claimed his life on Feb. 11, 2026, a GoFundMe was set up to help the family. Specifically, he is survived by his “devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children.”
On the site, they detail how “the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain,” and are now “facing an uncertain future.”
“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the GoFundMe added. “s. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.”
