Jen Lilley Shares How an ‘Accidental’ Degree Paid-Off on the Set of Her New Hallmark Movie

Life may have just handed Jen Lilley a full-circle moment; and we can’t wait to see what she does with it. The Hallmark favorite is gearing up for her upcoming movie “A Royal Setting,” but the real story isn’t just about royal romance or glittering crowns. It’s about an unexpected skill that went from random college credits to a full on-set advantage.

Yep, you read that right, she accidentally got a college degree.

In a new Instagram post shared on March 18, 2026, Lilley gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek into how her academic detour turned into a surprisingly perfect fit for her latest role… and the story is both charming and relatable.

That ‘Accidental’ Degree? It Paid Off

Let’s be real; most of us have taken a class (or five) just because it sounded interesting. Lilley? She took that energy and somehow walked away nearly earning an entire degree.

“Meet Ruby Robinson 👑 She’s a gemologist. And fun fact — I accidentally have an environmental science degree from UVA,” Lilley begins.

She then shared the moment it all clicked into place.

“A professor once noticed I’d taken so many environmental science classes that she pulled me aside and asked if I had an advisor. I said no, I just take classes I like. She was like…but aren’t you a drama student? Turns out I was two classes away from a degree — she offered to be my advisor on the spot.”

Honestly, that’s the kind of academic plot twist you can’t script. It seems like curiosity really did the heavy lifting here; and now, years later, it’s paying off in a way she probably never expected.

From Struggling in Lab to Owning the Set

Of course, not every class was a walk in the park. Lilley kept it refreshingly real when talking about her experience with gemology specifically.

“One of the required classes was a gemology lab. My worst lab, for the record 😂 Geology? Thrived. Gemology? Survived.”

And yet (plot twist) that very subject is now front and center in “A Royal Setting.”

While filming, Lilley got to work hands-on with the tools tied to her character’s profession, something she admits felt like a personal redemption arc. “Getting to actually handle all the tools on set — that redeemed my lab grade in my heart!” she said. “Turns out all my deep curiosities finally served me! An actress with an environmental science degree finally came in handy!

We’re here for this kind of glow-up. Because really, who hasn’t doubted a random skill at some point, only for it to sneak back in and be relevant later?

What ‘A Royal Setting’ Is All About

If you’re already sold, here’s the official premise: according to Hallmark Channel, “Ruby, a world-renowned gemologist, is hired by Prince Luca to restore the crown jewels and design his crown. This challenges tradition and complicates his relationship with his mother, the queen.

The film stars Lilley alongside Dan Jeannotte, and it looks like it’s bringing the classic Hallmark mix of romance, ambition, and a little royal tension. Lilley also made sure fans had the date circled, writing, “👑 A Royal Setting — March 28, @hallmarkchannel , 8 PM (7 central) 🏰

When Random Skills Come Full Circle

To top it all off, Jen Lilley invited fans to join in on the fun, asking them to share their own unexpected talents that finally proved useful. And honestly? That might be the most relatable part of this whole thing.

Because it seems like sometimes the things we pick up “just because” end up being the exact thing we need later. Whether it’s a random class, a niche hobby, or a skill you thought you’d never use again… this is your sign that it might come back around.

And if nothing else, Lilley just proved that even your “worst lab” can still have a happy ending.

“A Royal Setting” airs Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 8:00pm ET on Hallmark, streaming next day on Hallmark+.
