Awkwafina Mourns the Loss of Her Dear Grandmother
Awkwafina is saying one of the hardest goodbyes this week. In a new social media update, the 38-year-old publicly shared that her beloved grandmother has passed away.
“Dear grandma, making you laugh was my favorite thing to do. I will miss you everyday and carry you with me wherever I go,” the actress shared on Instagram, attaching some of her favorite memories with her grandmother.
Awkwafina included photos of herself as a baby in her grandmother’s arms. She also attached images and clips of fun outings they shared in recent years. Fans showered the actress in sympathy amid her heartbreaking loss.
“Sending you love. You honor her everyday 🕊️🕊️🕊️” one fan kindly wrote in the comments.
“My sincere condolences. Nothing like the love of a grandma 🙏❤️🙏” another added.
“May everyone know the love of growing up w grandma in your corner. Sending all the love to you and your family 🤍🤍🤍” another chimed in.
The Marvel Star’s Grandmother Helped Raise Her
Awkwafina’s mother tragically passed away when she was four years old. Her grandmother played an active role in raising her and became an important pillar of her life, which eventually led to her acting career.
“I used to tell her dirty jokes when I was like, 9 (or) 10,” the rapper told ABC’s Peter Travers in 2018.
“And she would just laugh,” Awkwafina continued, noting that her grandmother never tried to reprimand her. “She would just laugh. She kind of nurtured that spunkiness that I had. And I think that’s kind of led to that delusional confidence that I now have. Thank you, Grandma.”
In 2019, Awkwafina gushed over her grandmother while speaking with “Today.” Even amid all the drama and chaos, her grandmother was always there.
“‘My grandma was everything,” the “Crazy Rich Asians” actress shared, revealing that her grandmother “saved” her. “She taught me to be strong. She was a gift in every way.”
Though Awkwafina is an accomplished actress and beloved by the public, she still worked hard to impress her family.
“I showed her a screener of ‘The Farewell’ and she got up basically at the most pivotal part,” the actress told PEOPLE in 2020. “And I was like, ‘Where are you going?’ And she was like, ‘I gotta cook.’ So I went on national television and I told that story, and she felt so guilty so now she goes to see all of my movies.”
Thankfully, Awkwafina’s grandmother finally finished the film.
“She got up in the middle, and then she went to see it in theaters and she was like, ‘I stayed, alright?’” the comedian laughed.
Our hearts go out to Awkwafina and her family during this difficult chapter.
