It has officially been 16 years since Jersey Shore aired “The Note.” The episode didn’t just break the house in half, it cemented the MTV reality series in pop culture history forever.
‘Jersey Shore’s’ Most Iconic Episode Began With a Good Idea, Gone Terribly Wrong
When Jersey Shore premiered in late 2009, nobody expected a group of eight self-proclaimed “guidos and guidettes” sharing a summer house in Seaside Heights, New Jersey to become an international phenomenon. But by the time Season 2 kicked off in Miami Beach in the summer of 2010, the cast members were household names and it appeared everyone knew Mike Sorrentino, Nicole Polizzi, Vinny Guadagnino, Pauly D, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Deena Cortese, Angelina Pivarnick, Jenni Farley, and Sammi Giancola.
While the series was already packed with memorable catchphrases, Season 2, Episode 5 titled “The Letter” delivered the single most iconic piece of reality television history: an anonymous, typed letter meant to expose a cheating boyfriend. The episode originally aired on August 26, 2010.
The note’s origin story hailed from an incident where Ronnie Ortiz-Magro cheated with other girls at a local Miami club while his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Giancola, remained at home. Polizzi and Farley wanted to warn Giancola about Magro’s infidelity, but they faced a classic reality TV dilemma: if they told her directly, Ronnie would become angry. If they said nothing, they were bad friends.
All About ‘The Note’
In the episode’s most unforgettable scene, Jenni Farley and Nicole Polizzi snuck out to a local internet cafe to type out an anonymous warning to Giancola. It began, “Use this information as you will.”
Once they were done, the women folded the typed note and placed it inside Giancola’s plastic bedside drawer in the room she shared with Magro. When she discovered the message, it triggered a massive house argument.
Instead of confronting Ronnie, Sammi fixated entirely on finding out who wrote the note. The tension simmered across the house for days, leading to an explosive, living-room-brawl between Giancola and Farley remains one of MTV’s most iconic moments.
Years later, the women said, as reported by People Magazine, that they wished they could have handled the situation differently.
Polizzi admitted that she regretted how they handled the situation. “If I had to go back, I would tell you to your face,” she told Giancola. “I was 22 and so dramatic back then. If the note happened now, I think I would have handled it a little bit differently,” she says.
Sixteen years after it first hit airwaves, “The Note” stands as an iconic moment in MTV and “Jersey Shore” pop culture. It captured a very specific era of the decade, and when a simple piece of paper could derail an entire house.
