10 Music Artists Who Use Fake Names … But Their Talent’s All Real

Stage names have always been part of music culture. Sometimes musicians, like Lady Gaga, choose them for privacy, sometimes for style. Sometimes it’s just because they’re just cooler sounding than a birth certificate ever could. While fans may know these artists by their iconic names, their real names are totally different. We are 10 musicians who use fake names, but whose talent is undeniably real.

1. Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta)

Stefani Germanotta started using the name Lady Gaga early in her career. The name choice was inspired by the Queen song “Radio Ga Ga.”

The theatrical name perfectly matched her bold artistry. It helped define one of pop music’s most distinctive brands.

2. Bruno Mars (Peter Gene Hernandez)

Before he became a global superstar, Peter Hernandez struggled to fit into a specific musical box. That is where Bruno Mars came into play. Changing his name gave him flexibility and swagger, which is something he has used to dominate charts across different genres.

3. Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty)

While it isn’t a completely different name, it’s still not her first name. Rihanna performs under her middle name. She dropped her first name, Robyn, early on in her career.

The one-word name helped turn Rihanna into a global icon. She also used her last name to create an enormous fashion brand.

4. Drake (Aubrey Drake Graham)

Another middle name here, as actor-turned-rapper Aubrey Graham chose to go by his middle name professionally. Drake took his middle name and ran, as he turned into a career of hit-making consistency and pop-rap dominance.

5. Post Malone (Austin Richard Post)

This is a wild one, as Post Malone’s name came from a random name generator. However, the name stuck, and everyone knows his name now. This unusual name matched his genre-blending style, but also helped him to stand out in a crowded industry.

6. Cardi B (Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar)

Cardi B’s name came about from her childhood nickname, “Bacardi.” The name is bold and unforgettable, which perfectly reflects her unapologetic personality and chart-topping success.

7. Elton John (Reginald Kenneth Dwight)

One of music’s most legendary performers wasn’t always known as Elton John. He came up with the name by blending the names of fellow musicians Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. Elton was able to create a persona that became synonymous with pop greatness.

8. The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye)

We always wondered why it was spelled this way, but Abel Tesfaye dropped the “e” from “Weekend” to avoid any trademark issues. It turned out to be one of the most recognizable stage names in modern music. This mystique helped match The Weeknd’s moody sound.

9. Lana Del Rey (Elizabeth Grant)

Elizabeth Grant reinvented herself as Lana Del Rey. She was able to craft a cinematic persona rooted in nostalgia and melancholy. The name became inseparable from her artistic identity.

10. Nicki Minaj (Onika Tanya Maraj)

Nicki Minaj was known as Onika Maraj. That is, until her producer gave her the new name, which has stuck. Over time, Nicki transformed the name into a symbol of lyrical skill, reinvention, and pop-rap dominance.

For many musicians, it’s not about hiding who they are, but it’s about storytelling. These musicians all prove that while the name may be made up, the talent behind it is unmistakably real.
