Kacey Musgraves found a very normal way to celebrate a new album release: dressing up as an armadillo and personally checking store shelves.
The country star shared the Instagram video on May 3, just days after releasing her sixth studio album, “Middle of Nowhere,” on May 1.
In the clip, the “Dry Spell” singer visited Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and Target while dressed in a full armadillo costume. She checked the music sections, grabbed copies of her vinyl, and fully committed to the bit.
The video had all the makings of an album-release week errand: store aisles, vinyl shelves, an interesting customer service interaction, and a Grammy-winning artist doing a somersault in Walmart.
Kacey Musgraves Promotes New Album With Store Crawl in Armadillo Costume
Musgraves stayed fully in character as she searched for her album in the music section of major retail stores.
The clip shows her scurrying around store aisles, checking shelves, and picking up vinyl copies of “Middle of Nowhere.”
The costume was also a very Texas-specific choice. The nine-banded armadillo is the official small state mammal of Texas, and the “Deeper Well” singer was born in Golden, Texas.
At Walmart, Musgraves leaned all the way in, even doing a somersault on the floor.
GettyShe also asked an employee whether the store had “the new Kacey Musgraves album.”
“I don’t recognize that name,” the employee said in the video. “OK, thank you,” Musgraves replied before silently grabbing a couple of records from the shelf with the straightest face possible.
The eight-time Grammy Award winner also showed up at Barnes & Noble and Target for the same armadillo mission. At Target, she broke into a funny little run while moving through the store.
By the end of the video, the armadillo appeared to have reached its limit.
Musgraves was shown lying down in the middle of the road like an exhausted armadillo who had simply done too much for release week.
Commenters leaned into the absurdity.
“If I was famous I would be doing this 😂❤️,” one person wrote.
“You are perfect don’t ever change,” another comment read.
Someone else wrote, “This is the correct use of free will 💀.”
Another person already had plans for the costume’s next stop.
“This how I’m showing up to at least one tour date,” the Instagram user wrote.
That comment landed at the right time.
Musgraves is not just celebrating a new album. She is also preparing to take it on the road.
Kacey Musgraves Releases ‘Middle of Nowhere’ and Announces Tour
Getty“Middle of Nowhere,” Musgraves’ sixth studio album, was released May 1.
The 13-track project is inspired by “Texas dancehall classics, humorous takes on the human condition,” and the space where traditional country meets other sounds, including Norteño and Zydeco, according to the singer’s website.
Musgraves spoke to Variety in April 2026 about the writing process behind “Middle of Nowhere,” saying it was shaped by a major personal reset.
“I’ve been in this period of learning how to be a single adult for the first time, really, in my adult life, so this was freaky for me,” Musgraves told the outlet.
“It was kind of like, ‘Oh God, I’m by myself,’ but I really learned how to lean into that: You’re in this weird hallway between what you’re sure about and what you can’t see.”
GettyMusgraves also told Variety she wanted the new album to move away from the more serious tone of “Deeper Well.”
“I purposely wanted to lean a little bit away from that, and have more fun with phrasing and humor, which a lot of my earlier songs used to do,” she said.
“It’s been fun to play with that again, because I love laughing, and I really feel like America also needs to laugh.”
The armadillo video fits neatly into that part of the rollout.
Musgraves announced the “Middle of Nowhere Tour” on April 29.
The tour begins August 21 in Chicago, Illinois, and ends October 27 in Seattle, Washington.
She will be joined by Midland, Flatland Cavalry, Carter Faith, Estevie, Charles Wesley Godwin, William Beckmann, Gabriella Rose, and The Brudi Brothers on select dates.
Ticket presale begins Wednesday, May 6 at 10 a.m. local time, with general tickets going on sale Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. local time.
