The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of beloved actress Catherine O’Hara, who passed away on January 30. O’Hara leaves behind a loving family and an incredible career. Many actors who knew her or worked with her have paid tribute, including a heartfelt statement from her on-screen daughter, Annie Murphy.
Annie Murphy Pens Loving Tribute to Catherine O’Hara
Murphy played Alexis Rose on the popular series, “Schitt’s Creek,” which ran for six seasons from 2015 until 2020. O’Hara’s was her onscreen mother, Moira Rose.
Murphy shared several photos of herself and O’Hara on Instagram, and in her caption, she discussed who O’Hara was and how she would be missed. “Ha-ha-HAAAA?!?! Her laugh was a perpetual Yes, And… It challenged anyone who heard it to join in, and be as delighted as she was,” Murphy wrote. “Gosh, were we ever lucky to have her.”
She ended her message with the hashtag #goodbyetoagreatactress and a wearing sunglasses emoji. “The sunglasses are because I’m in mourning, David!” a fan shared. “Schitt’s Creek” was created by Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy. David refers to Dan’s character on the show, David Rose, who was O’Hara’s onscreen son. Eugene played Johnny Rose.
Other rections include, “The greatest mother daughter duo to ever hit the screen,” “The fact that I was watching this show at the moment I found out brought me to tears. She and this show was and still is my happy in these very stressing time. RIP Moira Rose,” and “It’s hard to put into words the feeling of this loss. Her work was a meaningful part of so many lives. Thinking of you, her family, and those closest to her.”
Remembering Catherine O’Hara
GettyO’Hara and Eugene had a friendship that spanned five decades after first meeting in the ‘70s at the Toronto-based improv troupe, Second City. Both Eugene and Dan have penned beautiful tributes for O’Hara as they mourn her loss and celebrate her brilliance.
“What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years,” Dan wrote on Instagram. “Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her. My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke and every member of her big, beautiful family.”
GettyO’Hara had an incredible career with her most recent work on the series “The Studio” and “The Last of Us,” both of which last aired in May 2025. Her death was announced by her rep, who revealed she died at her Los Angeles Bentwood home “following a brief illness,” TMZ reports. She was 71.
