Nancy Guthrie Abduction: Friends & Neighbors Share Their Thoughts on Her Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1. Law enforcement believes that she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and as the search enters its fourth week, the missing Guthrie matriarch is on the minds of many people. Those who knew and loved Guthrie have been deeply affected by her disappearance, and several of her friends have spoken to the media about her. These are some of the things they have been saying.

Remembering Nancy Guthrie’s Beautiful Personality

Friends of Guthrie have spoken about her with great affection. One such friend is Jacqueline Sharkey, who praised Guthrie’s brilliant qualities. “She is completely devoted to her family, her faith, and her community,” Sharkey told AZCentral. “She’s been deeply engaged in education issues, in issues of public health, such as saving the Poison Information Center. She’s wise, and she’s kind.”

Another longtime friend of Guthrie’s is Patricia Sturmon, who described her as someone who can “identify people who are misguided or foolish.” Sturmon continued, “She is very special. She opens up to people who she meets, and she is genuine and very well educated.”

Family friend and former KVOA reporter Sally Shamrell spoke about “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie and her mother in an interview with CBS News, telling the outlet that the Guthries are a “very revered family” in Tucson. “Nancy and Savannah have both contributed so much to the Tucson community,” Shamrell said. “…They’re just positive contributors and very faithful women. What’s going on is absolutely heart-wrenching.”

Nancy Guthrie’s Missing Persons Case Leaves Neighbors Unsettled

With each friend who gives an interview, a brighter spotlight is shone on her missing persons case. Most friends have chosen to share their memories of her and describe what a wonderful person she is, but there is also a sense of unease. Neighbors and close friends no longer feel the sense of safety they did just weeks earlier. Some have even upgraded their home security systems

Guthrie’s book club buddy, Mary Ann Blevins, told Us Weekly, “She doesn’t have any enemies at all. And this, it’s just a freaky thing.” This sentiment has been echoed by Guthrie’s neighbor, Laura Gargano, who said seeing footage of a masked individual outside Guthrie’s home was terrifying. “It was startling and a bit terrifying,” Gargano told CNN on February 11.

Still, many have not given up hope that Guthrie will be found, alive and well.

“Some of us put flowers at the front of Nancy’s house, while others who may not have wanted to go down to Nancy’s house, put ribbons on their mailboxes,” Gargano told People in an interview published on February 18. “The yellow ribbon is a sentiment of hope and support after someone goes missing. I believe the use of the yellow ribbons goes back to hostage-taking in the 1970s.”
