Former FBI Agent Opens Up About Suspect in Nancy Guthrie Case

It is now almost five weeks since the mysterious disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. The investigation into the kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mother continues but with no breakthrough in the case, the public and the Guthrie family have had little positive news since Nancy was forcibly removed from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

Unfortunately, this has led to intense speculation as people attempt to understand what has happened and who might have taken Nancy, including suggestions about the identity of the suspect. Now, a former FBI agent has weighed in on the case and suggested that when the suspect is found, most individuals will likely be underwhelmed about exactly who they are.

Ex-FBI Agent Discusses How the Identity of the Suspect Will Likely Be Underwhelming for Most People

During an appearance on the “Hidden Killers with Tony Bruesk” podcast, former FBI special agent Robin Dreeke discussed the suspect in the investigation and how they are unlikely to be a high-profile individual or someone involved in organized crime.

Dreeke spent more than two decades in the FBI and served as Chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program during his tenure with the federal agency.

Discussing the case with host Bruesk, Dreeke explained that the way law enforcement had described the kidnapping as “targeted” may have confused some people into thinking that this was a sophisticated operation from someone who specifically wanted to take Nancy.

“We see this word targeted in a fictional, targeted way,” Dreeke said. “Everything we see in law enforcement is reality, we expect different things to happen because we have the grandiosity from TV shows.”

The FBI veteran added that the truth is likely to be much more mundane than the outlandish theories put forward by some members of the public. He said, “That’s why I think we’re going to be underwhelmed. Targeted means a lot of different things. It’s a key word. It’s a hot word.”

Expert Believes Simplest Explanation Indicates Suspect is Not a Professional Kidnapper

Speaking on a different episode of the podcast, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott offered a similar take. She explained that she prefers to look to the simplest explanation and this points to the kidnapper being someone who may not have even planned on abducting Nancy and is unlikely to be a professional who has done something like this before.

She said: “I go with the simplest explanation that fits the evidence we have. As you say we don’t have a lot. It doesn’t have the sophistication of a cartel. The mass killers I write about, the mass shooters go out and take out people in a public place. It’s certainly not someone like that.”

“To some degree it looks targeted but that doesn’t mean sophisticated,” she continued. “To my mind it looks like a person coming in for a burglary and there was a bad outcome. It’s sad, it’s unfortunate, we’d rather there was a ransom the family could pay and have a good outcome but it’s not looking like that.”
