In a press conference on February 5, 2026, local and federal authorities revealed new details about the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie. That included a detailed timeline of Nancy’s disappearance from her home in Tucson, Arizona, overnight on February 1.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos outlined details of where Nancy was before her disappearance and what happened overnight.
Authorities Share Timeline of Nancy Guthrie’s Apparent Abduction
GettyDuring the February 5 press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos provided a detailed look at what they know about Nancy’s whereabouts on January 31, leading to her likely abduction overnight on February 1:
- January 31 at 5:32 p.m. — Nancy took an Uber from her house to her daughter Annie Guthrie’s home for dinner on Saturday night. Authorities have spoken with the driver, Nanos said.
- January 31 at 9:48 p.m. — Nancy’s family dropped her off at home and the garage door opened.
- January 31 at 9:50 p.m. — Nancy’s garage door closed.
- February 1 at 1:47 a.m. — The doorbell camera at Nancy’s front door was disconnected. Officials would not go into detail about how they believe that happened.
- February 1 at 2:12 a.m. — Software detected movement on-camera, but Nanos said it’s possible that it was an animal rather than a person. Unfortunately, the video is unavailable because the family did not have a subscription to maintain video and it was automatically reset, Nanos said.
- February 1 at 2:28 a.m. — Nancy’s pacemaker app was disconnected from her phone, which authorities have previously said was left at her residence.
- February 1 at 11:56 a.m. — Nancy’s family checked on her. Authorities previously shared that they grew concerned when a friend at church called to say Nancy never showed up.
- February 1 at 12:03 p.m. — The Guthrie family called police.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke, Phoenix Division, also appeared at the press conference and confirmed that the same ransom letters — which have not been verified but that authorities are taking seriously — issued a deadline of February 5 at 5 p.m. (they did not specify the time zone). He noted that another deadline of Monday, February 9, was given but did not provide further details.
Nancy Guthrie’s Children Released a Heartbreaking Video on February 4
Janke also announced a new reward of up to $50,000, increased from a reward of $2,500 offered earlier in the week. Anyone with information on Nancy or her potential abductors has been encouraged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or email online@tips.fbi.gov.
On the evening of February 4, Savannah and her siblings — sister Annie and brother Camron — released a heartbreaking video via social media, tearfully reading messages for their mom and those authorities believe abducted her.
Former FBI agents provided analysis of the video shortly after its release, including News Nation contributor Tracy Walder, who said in a social media video, “Mark my words, this video … was heavily scripted,” Walder said. “They are reading off of scripts. That’s good. They should be. The FBI has very specific things that they want them to say.”
