“Spaceballs” will finally be returning to the big screen, as the studio has set a release date for the much-anticipated sequel.
The release date for the “Spaceballs 2,” produced by Mel Brooks, also coincides with a big anniversary for the film.
‘Spaceballs 2’ To Return In 2027
Amazon MGM announced “Spaceballs 2” will be released April 23, 2027, in time for the 40th anniversary of the cult classic.
Many beloved cast members will be returning for the sequel, including Rick Moranis in his first acting role in almost 30 years. Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet, reports Variety.
Also returning for the “Star Wars” spoof are Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz.
Brooks, an EGOT winner and legend of the industry, will also return in the role of Yogurt.
Joining the cast are Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan and Lewis Pullman.
GettyThe plot of the film is being kept tightly under wraps, but in typical Brooks fashion, the details provided have been firmly tongue-in-cheek.
The official synopsis states “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story,” per Variety.
A prior logline stated “Spaceballs 2” is a “non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.”
Lewis Pullman Describes Working With Dad Bill
GettyLewis Pullman described his experience working with his father in an interview with People, calling it “a dream come true.”
“We just wrapped, and… every day was such a trip. It was kind of like a… felt like a bizarre simulation. I just couldn’t believe my luck,” he said.
“We’ve been wanting to do that forever and we never knew whether we could get the chance or not,” he continued. “And so doing it on a movie like ‘Spaceballs 2’ was just like… What world are we in right now?”
Moranis Makes Return To Big Screen
Getty“Spaceballs 2” also marks Rick Moranis’ much anticipated return to the big screen.
After the death of his wife, Ann, in 1991, Moranis quietly stepped out of the spotlight. By 1996, he had taken a break from acting to focus on raising his two children.
“I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97,” he told USA Today.
“I just found it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break, and the little bit of a break turned into a longer break.”
An Instagram post confirmed Moranis’ return to the film. The caption read, “Spaceballs The Table Read.”
