Colton Underwood Reveals What Happened in His Breakup to Cassie Randolph

After finishing Season 23 of “The Bachelor” together, Colton Underwood and Cassie Randolph were Bachelor Nation’s newest winning couple. But, almost a year and a half after their finale, their messy breakup took fans by surprise.

Instead of an amicable split, Randolph was granted a temporary restraining order against Underwood in September 2020, months after their breakup announcement. Among the allegations was that he sent her excessive text messages, showed up to her home unannounced, and put a tracking device on her car.

By November, Randolph withdrew the lawsuit after a private agreement with Underwood. Now, he’s sharing his side of the story.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Underwood took readers into his mental headspace at the time.

“It was 2020. It was, as people remember, COVID. I was fully convinced that she was gonna be my last straight…like, I was going to have to either kill myself or come out,” he told the outlet. “That’s just transparently, like, where my mindset was.”

After acknowledging his poor mental health at the time, Underwood held himself accountable.

“I will always own the mistakes that I made,” he said. “I will always feel guilt and feel this extreme sadness for how I showed up for certain friends, for people in my life. Also fans—letting people down.”

He then also revealed his substance abuse problems at the time, which led to his erratic behavior.

“I was struggling with Xanax and prescription medications,” he revealed. “It was a pretty intense moment in my life where I made some really, really poor decisions.”

Underwood also sent a message to the thousands of fans out there who were against him being cast in the latest season of “The Traitors.”

“The difficult part now is seeing the people who have a lot to say about what happened six years ago,” he said. “It’s lacking a lot of the context of where our world was at, but also where I was at, the state of mind that I was in. The pressures and the threats that I was going through. I will always take accountability. I will always own mistakes that I made. But everything that you’re seeing on social media—these videos, these people who have a lot to say—is not correct.”

Despite no longer being in a legal battle together, Underwood revealed that he and Randolph, who recently got married to her husband Brighton Reinhardt, are still not speaking.

“If she ever did reach out or want to reach out, I would be open to answering any questions that her or her family would have for me,” Underwood said. “That is something I’ve always offered.”

“I’m in no position to really say much more than that or reach out,” he continued. “There’s been no part of me that would. I would always be up for it. It’s all on her terms.”

Since their split, Underwood has gone to marry Jordan C. Brown. They welcomed their first child, a son named Bishop Colton Brown-Underwood, in September 26, 2024.
