“The Voice” premiered in 2011 and has become one of TV’s most successful singing competitions. A big part of that is thanks to the rotating lineup of superstar coaches. While some of the coaches stayed long enough to define eras on the show, others exited just as fans were getting attached. Whether it was due to busy schedules, creative shifts, or one-season experiments, these coaches on “The Voice” left audiences and fans wishing they had stuck around a little longer.
1. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson may have been a contestant on “American Idol,” but she brought her powerhouse vocals to “The Voice” as a coach during seasons 13 and 15. The Oscar and Grammy winner’s firsthand experience navigating the music industry and singing competition shows made her a compelling coach.
Hudson even secured a win in season 15 with Chevel Shepherd, proving she had the coaching chops needed on this show. However, she stepped away after just two seasons to focus on acting, music, and later her own daytime talk show. Many fans missed her warmth and relatability after her departure.
2. Usher
Usher is an R&B legend, and he joined “The Voice” as a coach in seasons 4 and 6. His calm demeanor and deep industry knowledge made him a strong coach.
That all helped him guide Josh Kaufman to a win during season 6. Despite this quick success, Usher chose not to continue as a coach on the show beyond his limited stint.
His ability to connect with these artists on a personal level made his exit feel very premature.
3. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus shook things up on “The Voice” during seasons 11 and 13. Not only did she bring her bold fashion and genre-blending taste to the show, but she also showed an outspoken support for her artists.
Miley encouraged contestants to take risks and embrace individuality. This resonated with younger viewers of the show.
She was on the show for only two seasons and wasn’t able to secure a win during that time. However, she brought a fresh edge that many felt the show lost when she left.
4. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande may have only been on “The Voice” for one season, but no other one-season coaches generated as much buzz as her.
Ariana had a massive fan base, an enthusiasm for coaching, and a deep knowledge of vocal technique. This all helped make her a standout addition to season 21.
Unfortunately, she had other commitments in music, film, and theater that prevented her from coming back. Fans were very disappointed, thinking she was just getting warmed up as a coach.
5. Shakira
Shakira is a global pop icon, and she joined “The Voice” during seasons 4 and 6, the same as Usher. She instantly brought international flair and an infectious energy to the panel.
Shakira gave thoughtful feedback, her coaching style was nurturing, and her chemistry with the other coaches was memorable. However, she had a very demanding touring schedule, which made a long-term commitment unrealistic.
While it was a brief run on the show, fans were left wondering how many more standout performances she could have helped shape.
6. Camila Cabello
Another one-season coach, Camila Cabello, joined “The Voice” during season 22. She brought pop sensibility and heartfelt mentorship to the show.
Yes, her time on “The Voice” was brief, but she connected strongly with her artists. She was also able to give them some thoughtful guidance that was rooted in her own journey on “The X Factor.”
Camila’s exit after one season left viewers feeling like her coaching style deserved more time to develop.
Just a sidenote, but we also feel Blake Shelton left “The Voice” too soon. Sure, he coached for 23 seasons, but how could the show go on without him?
Which coach do you think left “The Voice” too soon?
