Hilary Duff Gets Emotional Talking About ‘Devastating’ Relationship With Her Parents

Hilary Duff is coming clean when it comes to her relationship with her parents. The singer, who recently released her first album in more than a decade, “Luck… or Something,” joined Jay Shetty for the Monday, March 9, episode of his “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast where she opened up about her family struggles.

Hilary Duff’s Relationship With Her Parents

The “Lizzie McGuire” alum got emotional while talking to Shetty about her parents.

“It’s definitely a raw nerve. Everybody has their reasons [for not speaking] and relationships are difficult even with your family. Especially with your family,” Duff said. “I think it’s easier when you aren’t connected that way.”

Susan and Robert Duff divorced in 2008 after 20 years of marriage, according to Entertainment Weekly.

On her new song “The Optimist,” Duff sings, “I wish I could sleep on planes / And that my father would really love me / He’d show up on my wedding day / And tell my family they’re all so lucky / He’d tell me how he wish he’d stayed / And that he never meant to disappoint me / But ’til then I’ll exist as the optimist”

According to Duff, she “[doesn’t] don’t have relationships with both of [her] parents.”

“It’s devastating,” she explained. “It doesn’t matter what age you are, you want your parents to feel like they care about you. And a big portion of my existence hasn’t felt like that.”

She added, “I don’t know if that’s the truth, but that’s how it feel. And so that’s just what I’m sharing in that song.”

Hilary Duff Does Not Speak to Sister Haylie Duff

Hilary has been open about her rift with sister Haylie Duff while promoting her album, particularly in reference to her song “We Don’t Talk.”

“I’m not sure when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,” she sings. “We don’t talk / We don’t talk / Talk about it / We don’t talk about anything anymore.”

She later confirmed that the lyrics are about her relationship with Haylie.

“My sister and I don’t speak. And I think in my adulthood, I’ve come across more and more people that are having this experience,” she told Shetty on Monday’s episode. “And as painful as it feels to share, when I decided to make this record, I could only talk about the things that I’ve gone through.”

While she does not go into detail about the root of her issues with her only sibling, Hilary remains hopeful for a future reconciliation.

“I hope it’s not forever, but it’s for right now,” she said through tears.
