Celebrating Luke Perry’s Legacy, 7 Years After ‘90210’ Star’s Passing

“Beverly Hills 90210” star Luke Perry’s passing in March 2019 was a heartbreaking loss, but his spirit, talent, and the joy he brought to screens everywhere continue to shine brightly, seven years later.

PEOPLE reflected on the actor’s lasting legacy, which included the titular television role of “90210’s” Dylan McKay, as well as roles on “Riverdale” where he played Fred Andrews, “Oz” as Reverend Jeremiah Cloutier, and in the title role of the series “Jeremiah.” Perry also starred in the feature films “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “The Fifth Element,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

The latter film was released after Perry’s passing, in July 2019. To honor his father’s legacy, his son, Jack Perry, posted an Instagram video where he was seen climbing a billboard that featured his father’s role in the Quentin Tarantino feature.

In an accompanying message, Perry’s son wrote, “Big premiere tonight. He deserved this, and I’m very proud of it. A stud in life, and forever after. The best of the best. Love you forever.”


When Did Luke Perry Become Famous?

The actor became an instant teen heartthrob with his cool, good looks and exciting storylines as part of the FOX teen drama. which Perry starred in from 1990 through 1995. He returned to the series from 1998 through 1990.

In 1991, Perry spoke about this life-changing time period to PEOPLE. The actor revealed, “I was laying asphalt the week before I got ‘Beverly Hills, 90210.'”

He added, “[Fame] makes you crazy once in a while. But all of that is just fantasy. This is reality. I’m a simple guy. I don’t need a whole lot.” 

In a 1992 interview with TODAY, Perry was already considering his professional and personal legacy. He told journalist Maria Shriver, “I want to do something with my life. When my time here is up, I don’t want to look back and see that I didn’t do anything.”

The actor’s legacy produced two of the most important people in his life: his son Jack and daughter Sophie. He was preparing to wed fiancée Wendy Madison Bauer.

Luke Perry died on March 4, 2019, five days after suffering a stroke, PEOPLE reported. He was laid to rest in Dickson, Tennessee.

Perry’s on-screen “90210” love interest, Shannen Doherty, shared beloved memories of working with the actor with PEOPLE in 2019. She said, “I have so many memories with Luke that make me smile and that are forever imprinted on my heart and mind.”

Castmate Tori Spelling called Perry “a brother,” and Jennie Garth called the actor “a special person.” Jason Priestley, who played the actor’s best pal on “90210,” recalled Perry was always “a bright light.”

Luke Perry’s legacy lives on through the unforgettable characters he brought to life. His work and spirit continue to bring joy to fans, seven years after his passing.
