Ryan Seacrest Makes Surprise Call For ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant

Being the host of “Wheel of Fortune” gives Ryan Seacrest the chance to meet a lot of people, including contestant Kimmy Hwang. The San Francisco-based teacher scored big during her episode, taking home two incredible trips. However, there was just one problem: Hwang wasn’t 100% sure she could take the time off to enjoy her prizes.

“I hope I can,” she said when Seacrest asked if she could take time away from her elementary school job. “Well, let’s ask now!” the host said. “Principal Lee, we’re calling.” The audience laughed, and Hwang and her husband also couldn’t help but crack a smile. Although she didn’t win the bonus round, the teacher took home an impressive $25,260, including her trip to Alaska and a Holland America cruise.

Seacrest has been a familiar face on “American Idol” for decades, but his tenure on “Wheel of Fortune” is just getting started. He took over for Pat Sajak for the 2024-2025 season and undoubtedly faced plenty of pressure to fill the TV legend’s role. In June 2025, Seacrest reflected on his first season in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. “I have a lot of fun with the job, but I take the responsibility very seriously,” Seacrest said of his approach to hosting the game show. “We all have memories of watching ‘Wheel’ with our families.”

His methods are clearly paying off. Although he had a rough start to his “Wheel of Fortune” tenure with fans, Seacrest seems to have found his groove — and has the numbers to prove it. As Variety reported, both viewership and ratings were up year to year after his first season at the helm. Now in his second season, Seacrest looks more comfortable than ever.

‘American Idol’ Will Also Keep Him Busy in 2026

Of course, “Wheel of Fortune” is far from Seacrest’s only gig. In 2026, fans will also be able to see the host in action for a new season of “American Idol.” As The Hollywood Reporter shared in September 2025, he officially agreed to return for what will be his 24th season of the competition show (his 9th with ABC). Last season’s judges, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, will also return.

Hosting two popular series is certainly a huge workload, but “Idol” holds a special place in Seacrest’s heart. Ten years prior, when Fox cancelled the long-running series, he spoke about what the show meant to him and his career. “It’s a show about chasing and fulfilling dreams, and truth be told, it helped some of my own dreams come true, too,” he told People at the time. Season 24 premieres on January 26, 2026.
