Slater Nalley Signs Major Record Deal 5 Months After ‘American Idol’ Finale

2025 has been quite a year for 18-year-old Slater Nalley. In May, the singer-songwriter attended his high school graduation via FaceTime because he was busy rising to the top five on season 23 of “American Idol.”

Days after the finale, during which he was surprised onstage by country star Cody Johnson, the Georgia native signed a management deal with one of Luke Bryan’s longtime friends and collaborators. By August, Nalley had moved away from home to chase his music dreams in Nashville.

Then, on October 17, 2025, Music Row reported that Warner Music Nashville/Warner Records signed a record deal with Nalley in partnership with 19 Entertainment — the branch of Sony Television that co-produces “American Idol” among other shows. In a statement, Nalley said that “the team and staff genuinely care about the power of music and truly believe in me” and thanked “all who made this possible.”

News of Nalley’s record deal arrived on the same day his debut single, “Foolish Pride,” was released. Nalley played part of the original tune during his “American Idol” run.

Slater Nalley Wrote ‘Foolish Pride’ When He Was Just 15

“Foolish Pride,” Nalley’s debut single as a signed artist will likely sound familiar to “American Idol” fans. The teen played part of the tune for judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie during Hollywood Week. He told producers that he wrote the profound lyrics at age 15, “when I was going through a hard time in a relationship.”

He explained, per Music Row, that the tune “delves into self-reflection and the realization that sometimes change is necessary.”

Nalley first captured viewers’ attention with his emotional audition, during which he sang another original song. Accompanied by his English teacher from The Lovett School, Michelle Davis, Nalley performed a song he wrote called “Traces of You. The heartfelt tune was written in honor of Davis’ late son, Carter, who was murdered in a random attack in 2016 when he was just 17, per WXIA-TV.

Video of Nalley’s audition quickly went viral after it aired in early March, attracting 5.9 million TikTok views. With every round of competition, the teen’s charm and southern rock sound sent him sailing through to the top 5. As one of the season’s finalists, Nalley got to record and release the song through 19 Recordings in May.
