UPDATE: James Van Der Beek’s Family Surpasses GoFundMe Goal After His Passing

“Dawson’s Creek” alum James Van Der Beek—who passed away at age 48—left behind six children and his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek. Following their devastating loss, the family is asking for support as they launched a GoFundMe.

Van Der Beek Family Launches GoFundMe

The Van Der Beek family was hoping to raise $500,000 following the death of the “Varsity Blues” star.

“James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children,” the GoFundMe post explains. “Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”

The statement continues, “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

Donations began pouring in, as just minutes after sharing the link to Instagram, the fundraiser had reached more than $100,000. Things multiplied quickly as various $10,000 donations rolled in, in addition to a $25,000 donation from Guardant Health.

Six hours after the GoFundMe was launched, it had raised $850,000 from nearly 15,000 donors, setting a new goal for $1.3 million.

“Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,” the family’s statement concludes. “Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”

The “Dancing With the Stars” alum lost his battle with colorectal cancer, his family announced on Wednesday, February 11.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time,” the statement, which was shared via Instagram, read. “Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Van Der Beek quietly battled the disease following his August 2023 diagnosis. He did not publicly reveal his cancer battle until November 2024.
