Rare footage of Hayden Panettiere from her first-ever red carpet interview has resurfaced. Entertainment Tonight opened its vault to share the 1998 clip. Panettiere was just 9 years old at the time. She attended the Hollywood premiere of “A Bug’s Life,” one of her earliest major movie roles. Her early connection to Disney princesses comes at a time when Anne Hathaway is also revisiting her own place in the princess world.
Hayden Panettiere’s First Red Carpet Interview
According to Entertainment Tonight, the footage was recorded at the premiere of “A Bug’s Life” in 1998. It marked Hayden Panettiere’s first movie premiere in Hollywood.
“Actually, yes, it is,” Panettiere said when asked if it was her first Hollywood movie premiere.
The moment captured a major milestone for the young performer. She had already worked on other movies, but this was a major Hollywood event for a film that would introduce her voice to a much larger audience.
Hayden Panettiere also admitted that she had not yet watched the movie with a large audience. She had heard people expected it to be “really great.” Still, she had never experienced the reaction herself.
When the interviewer reminded her that audiences would hear her as Princess Dot, Panettiere simply replied, “Yeah.”
The Voice of Princess Dot
As reported by SlashFilm, “A Bug’s Life” featured Hayden Panettiere as Princess Dot. Dot is the younger sister of Princess Atta, the heir to the ant colony’s throne.
The 1998 Pixar movie followed an ant named Flik on a quest to protect his colony from grasshoppers. Panettiere’s role as Dot marked her first voice performance.
That makes the old red carpet footage especially interesting. It shows Hayden Panettiere discussing the character before audiences had even experienced the movie.
The actress would continue working in voice acting throughout her career. Her later credits included Disney’s “Dinosaur,” along with “Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King” and “Alpha and Omega.”
Hayden Panettiere Was Technically a Disney Princess
According to SlashFilm, Pixar’s acquisition by Disney means Panettiere is technically a Disney princess through her role as Dot.
Dot is not part of the official Disney Princess franchise. Still, she is a princess character from a Pixar movie that is now owned by Disney. That gives Hayden Panettiere a rather unusual place in Disney history.
Her outfit at the premiere also looked remarkably princess-like. Hayden Panettiere wore a voluminous white and ivory tulle gown. The skirt featured multiple gathered tiers. Pink satin ribbon trimmed the edges.
A wide pink sash sat at her waist. She also wore a white cape with fur trim. Her long blonde curls fell around her shoulders, and a floral headband completed the look.
Hayden Panettiere’s Career Was Just Beginning
The “A Bug’s Life” premiere came years before Panettiere became widely known. Gold Derby noted that her career later included roles in “Remember the Titans,” “Heroes,” “Nashville” and the “Scream” franchise.
Hayden Panettiere passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. Her passing was confirmed by her representative, with her father remembering her as “an incredible light” and “a force of nature.”
Her work in “A Bug’s Life” came at the beginning of that journey. The Gold Derby noted that Panettiere received a Grammy nomination for her related spoken-word work, making her among the youngest nominees in the category.
Looking back at the Entertainment Tonight footage, the significance is easy to see. Hayden Panettiere was only 9 when she stepped onto that red carpet. She was still discovering what a major movie premiere felt like.
She had no idea how audiences would react to her performance, and was simply excited to be there.
That makes the vault footage a rare glimpse at the beginning of a long Hollywood career. It also preserves the moment when a young Panettiere could technically claim the title of Disney princess. Decades later, Anne Hathaway would bring her own princess connection to the Disney Legends ceremony.
