Former “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi and her 15-year-old daughter, Krishna, have a strong bond that includes sharing clothes and supporting each other’s career goals.
The mother-daughter duo opened up about their close relationship in the latest issue of Vogue India. “Our relationship with each other is the biggest part of our lives,” Krishna shared. “So much of our bond comes from us being in sync creatively.”
Krishna is supportive of her mom’s new venture into stand-up comedy, and gives her tips on how to make her material funnier. Lakshmi explained, “She’s always telling me, ‘Mom, just use me in your stand-up. I give you permission.’”
And Lakshmi is supportive of her daughter’s acting dreams as Krishna studies at the prestigious Julliard School in New York City. “She got a 100 on her acting callback,” Lakshmi bragged. “She worked really hard to get in, and I’m so proud of her.”
Padma Lakshmi & Krishna Admire Each Other
GettyPadma Lakshmi welcomed her daughter Krishna in 2010 with her then-partner businessman Adam Dell. Lakshmi was told at one point she might not be able to have children, so she was over the moon with joy when Krishna was born. “Once I finally got pregnant, it was such a surprise and such a joy. I didn’t [think] motherhood would be so fun,” she shared with People.
Now that Krishna is a teenager, the fun hasn’t stopped, and it’s clear the mother and daughter admire each other greatly. During a “Tell the Truth With Vogue” segment, Krishna was asked to name a fictional character her mother reminds her of and the answer was surprising.
“Ginny from ‘Ginny & Georgia,'” Krishna answered without hesitation. “I think she’s a survivor,” she explained. She then turned to her mom and said, “The cards have not been in your favor and I think you’ve made something of yourself.”
When it was time for Lakshmi to answer the same question she said, “She reminds me of Tinkerbell … If I’m in a bad mood or I’m stiff, she’ll just shake me up … She doesn’t want me to be afraid of who I am.”
Lakshmi & Krishna Have Opinions on Each Other’s Clothes
Lakshmi, a former model, and Krishna naturally have some opinions on each other’s fashion choices. “Before we leave the house, we’re pretty brutal with each other,” Krishna revealed. “I will be like, ‘You can’t wear that in public with me.'”
“She’s always telling me to dress more provocatively,” Lakshmi said, but would like her daughter to dress a bit more conservatively. Still, that doesn’t mean the two don’t share a similar taste in clothes.
“My mother’s whole closet is a time capsule of fashion,” Krishna told Vogue, and she raids it regularly.
