‘Friends’ Star Teases Sequel to Beloved 1990s Film

Lisa Kudrow is (hopefully) coming back to the big screen!

The beloved “Friends” actress sat down with Andy Cohen for the Monday, May 11, episode of “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,” where she spilled the latest details on a possible “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” sequel.

“Is there anything you can tell us about the ‘Romy and Michele’ sequel?” Cohen asked.

“Well, I mean, there’s a really funny script,” Kudrow admitted. “And, yeah, things are kind of moving toward it.”

‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel

Rumors have been swirling for months about a potential sequel to the 1997 comedy starring Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in January 2025 that a sequel was moving forward at 20th Century Fox. The outlet claimed that Kudrow and Sorvino were “in negotiations” at the time.

At the time, THR claimed that the team was “eyeing a June start date.”

In addition to the leading ladies reprising their iconic roles, screenwriter Robin Schiff returned to pen the sequel nearly 30 years later. Producer Laurence Mark is also set to return. Tim Federle of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” fame is set to direct the film.

Fans were thrilled by the news and took to social media to share their joy.

“I loved that film so much,” one fan shared via Reddit.

“I can’t wait! This is one of my favorite comfort movies. I’d say we watch it once every few months,” another shared.

A third added, “Loved the original. Absolutely on board for a sequel.”

While it seems the sequel is a bit delayed since The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news, things appear to be moving forward.

Filming Update

Despite reports that filming was set to begin in June 2025, Sorvino shared an update that September noting that things had been pushed back a year.

“The plan is right now to shoot it late spring,” Sorvino shared with Us Weekly. “The script is great. Robin Schiff, the original writer, wrote the sequel, and Lisa [Kudrow] and I have had a lot of input in it.”

She added, “It’s not like us just visiting and other people being [in] it,. Romy and Michele again, and we’re seeing what they’re up to nowadays, and the whole gang is back.”

Alan Cumming, who starred as Sandy Frink in the original film, shared that he will be reprising his role for the highly anticipated sequel.

“And then, this summer, we’re going to do the sequel of ‘Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion,'” Cumming said during a February appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show.”

He previously dropped a hint about the script, telling People in May 2025, “Obviously everyone’s still in each other’s lives.”

“But it may be in a different way … It’s nice to think of those characters still being old friends,” he added.

While the film does not have a release date set, Cumming hinted at a 2027 premiere.

“Next year we’d shoot it, and it would come out the following year, which would be 30 years since the [first] movie came out,” he told the outlet.
