In the wake of Eric Dane’s death from ALS at the age of 53, beautiful tributes from all over Hollywood have poured in, including one from “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes. But the most powerful final words may have come from Dane himself and were given directly to his young daughters through the Netflix series, “Famous Last Words.”
Eric Dane Spent Time Giving Life Advice to His Daughters
Netflix’s series “Famous Last Words” features interviews with notable figures, which are only shared after their deaths. Eric Dane himself filmed his interview with television writer Brad Falchuk in November 2025 alongside his legal wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia Dane.
Dane dedicated his interview to his daughters. “Billie and Georgia, these words are for you,” Dane expressed. “I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” actor also advised his daughters to find love, even if just in a treasured passion or interest. He also shared the importance of not spending too much time reflecting on regrets or doubts.
“The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown,” Dane shared. “So you have to live now. The present is all you have. Treasure it. Cherish every moment.”
Dane told his girls to also surround themselves with a caring community. “Find your people and allow them to find you. And then give yourselves to them. The best of them will give back to you.”
Rebecca Gayheart Made Sure Eric Dane Was Surrounded by His Family
In his Netflix interview, Eric Dane showed appreciation for the friends who supported him throughout his ALS journey. In a June 2025 interview with Diane Sawyer, he said that his legal wife, Rebecca Gayheart, was certainly on that list. He told Sawyer that he “talked to [Gayheart] every day.” He added, “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter.”
The two remained married in name only and had technically been separated since 2017, as Gayheart shared in a personal essay for The Cut. However, she made sure to go above and beyond for Dane, from fighting for his healthcare coverage to sharing regular meals with him and their daughters.
While Dane and Gayheart were no longer together, there was no love lost. Gayheart admitted in her essay for The Cut, “It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people. Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.”
While the exes’ situation was certainly complex, Gayheart spoke about the importance of being there for Dane, especially for the sake of their two daughters.
“I am definitely trying to show them that we show up for people no matter what. And he is our family. He is your father,” Gayheart shared on the “Broad Ideas” podcast with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen. She added, “I just want to make sure I provide them with the opportunity to spend time with him, so they don’t ever look back and go, ‘I wish I would’ve spent time with my dad.’”
