Tom Holland has revealed how his off-camera relationship with Zendaya has also helped the pair be even better at their jobs on-screen as well.
The actor, 30, opened up about how he and his partner work together as a couple on the June 2 episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast.
Holland and Zendaya, of course, met while filming the “Spider-Man” movies together, with Holland sharing an anecdote from the set of the latest film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” to highlight how comfortable they are with each other professionally.
Inside Their ‘Spider-Man’ Script Change
During the interview with Poehler, Holland reflected on an “amazing moment” filming the upcoming movie between him and Zendaya. “And it’s only because of our relationship that this happened,” he prefaced the story.
The two were filming a scene together, explained Holland, saying it was time to film Zendaya’s side of the conversation after shooting his.
“We’re doing her coverage, and I would never ever dream of saying this to an actress that I wasn’t with. And I said to her, ‘Do you think that this scene is working?’ And she was like, ‘No, I don’t think the scene is working at all,'” he continued.
When the producer also said they felt the same way, Holland then went to “Brand New Day” director Destin Daniel Cretton.
“I then sat down with Destin and said, ‘Hey, man, I know we’ve been shooting for hours, and I hate to tell you this, but I just don’t think that this scene is working. Z and I, like what we’re supposed to feel, we’re not feeling it in the moment,'” Holland shared.
“What I love about Destin is that he’s so calm, and there’s nothing that could throw him off. He listened, he sat down and said, ‘What is it that you’re trying to feel?’ And I told him, and he went, ‘You’re right. That’s exactly what we need to be feeling,'” the actor added.
Cretton, said Holland, then sent everyone home and worked with the writer to rewrite the scene.
“We came in the next day, we reshot the scene, and I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie. It really does,” Holland said. “It was just so funny, like, I was thinking about, like, if this wasn’t Zendaya that I was sitting across from, imagine on someone else’s coverage being like, ‘Do you think this is working?'”
Poehler then said she’s done just that, deadpanning, “I’m here to say, it does not go over well.”
Tom Holland Gushes Over Zendaya
Holland continued to gush over his partner elsewhere in the interview, when asked by Poehler what he’s learned from his other half.
“What I love about watching her work as an actress is she’s just fearless. She’s absolutely, 10-toes down, I’m going to give this everything,” he said. “When you watch her as Rue in [‘Euphoria’], she could not be so different from who she is in real life. And then if you see her as Emma in ‘The Drama,’ it’s just such a different performance, but with no less intent or passion or drive.”
“I think she’s I think she’s the best actor going. I really think she has something special,” he continued, as Poehler noted it’s nice to be in a relationship with someone who has the same profession.
“It’s a wild world being in this industry. There are ups and downs. You go from shooting a movie, which is when we’re all at our most comfortable, and then you do a press tour, and you feel like you’re standing out on the stage,” Holland continued.
“It’s so nice to have someone who understands that in such a personal way, so you can talk each other down or pick each other up. It’s a lifeline,” he concluded. “I couldn’t imagine doing what I do without her.”
