Fans Remember Aaliyah On Her Birthday 25 Years After Heartbreaking Plane Crash

It’s hard to believe the small plane crash that took the life of beautiful R&B music superstar Aaliyah happened almost 25 years ago. The songstress was born on January 16, 1979, and her plane went down as she departed the island where she filmed her final music video on August 25, 2001.

On her official website, Aaliyah’s biography says the Brooklyn native kickstarted her career by landing a five-night gig in Las Vegas performing with Gladys Knight at just 11 years old. She is quoted in the bio as crediting her parents for heavily supporting her career from the beginning, saying, “When I told my parents that I wanted to embark along this path, they were with me all the way. They were the ones who shuttled me back and forth to my vocal lessons, dance lessons, private guitar, play rehearsals at Gesu Elementary School and they even saw to it that the sets for the plays were transported to Mary Grove College in Michigan. What could be more important?”

Three years after the Vegas gig, she released her debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number,” to immediate success. Aaliyah frequently appeared on MTV’s “TRL” where she made up an iconic duo with the network’s late fan-favorite Veejay Ananda Lewis, who died of breast cancer in June 2025.

Aaliyah Finished Filming ‘Rock the Boat’ Video the Day She Died

Aaliyah tragically died in a small plane crash just hours after wrapping filming on what would be her final music video for the single “Rock the Boat.”

The video starts with a message that reads, “As we watch this vision of an angel, we will remember her spirit flying free along with the eight others who were with her. They soar together with our eternal love.”

The song debuted at No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 before peaking at No. 14. On the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, it peaked at No. 2.

Fans are paying tribute to the talented beauty by commenting on her Instagram page, which was set up posthumously. One fan wrote, “Happy birthday to the eternal Princess of Hip-Hop and R&B! Still an icon and one of the greatest female artists of all time, love you Aaliyah!”

Another said, “Happy Birthday Aaliyah you will never be forgotten.”

How Did Aaliyah’s Plane Crash?

ABC News reported on August 26, 2001 that Aaliyah had died in a plane crash in the Bahamas the previous night at just 22 years old after she and eight others took off in a Cessna 402.

One person, who was later identified as the starlet’s body guard Scott Gallin, initially survived the impact but later died after being rushed to a Florida hospital.

The report quotes then-editor of Vibe magazine Emil Wilbekin as predicting Aaliyah’s career could have reached heights similar to those of Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Madonna.

A CBS report revealed more information about the likely cause of the plane crash, saying investigators determined the plane was significantly overloaded. The report quotes the National Transportation Safety Board as saying, “The total weight of the luggage, fuel on board at the time of the accident, plus the weight of the passengers showed that the total gross weight of the airplane was substantially exceeded.”

The report says the plane was put out of balance by too much weight in the tail area.
