Nancy Guthrie Case Twist: Report Details Possible ‘Burglary-Gone-Wrong’

The search for “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother continues to take unexpected turns. More than two weeks have passed since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was last seen inside her Tucson home, and the uncertainty surrounding her disappearance has only deepened.

Now, as the investigation enters its third week, authorities are exploring a new possibility.

According to Arizona Family, a source familiar with the case says investigators are increasingly examining whether Nancy’s February 1 disappearance may have begun as a burglary that spiraled out of control.

Here’s where the case stands right now.

Why Cops Are Exploring ‘Burglary Gone Wrong’ Theory

Police continue to analyze doorbell footage that shows a masked man handling Nancy’s Nest camera outside her Tucson home in the early hours before she vanished.

If the encounter began as a burglary rather than a targeted kidnapping, investigators believe there remains a possibility that Nancy could still be alive.

Experts who reviewed the footage told Arizona Family that the suspect’s movements did not appear calculated or meticulously planned.

That assessment has added weight to the growing theory that the situation may have escalated unexpectedly rather than being carefully orchestrated from the start.

Glove Evidence and DNA Testing Take Center Stage

While authorities chase new leads and the investigation moves further, focus has now turned to forensic evidence recovered near Nancy’s home.

As per a statement released by the FBI to various media outlets, including CBS, the FBI said nearly 16 gloves were found about two miles from the property.

Most were believed to have been discarded by search teams during early canvassing efforts. One glove, however, drew closer scrutiny.

Federal officials stated that the glove “appears to match” the pair worn by the masked man seen in surveillance footage outside Nancy’s home.

The item was collected by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, sealed as evidence, and sent overnight to a private laboratory in Florida for analysis.

Investigators are now awaiting DNA results for an unknown male profile recovered from the glove. While standard testing can take roughly 24 hours, authorities have not said when findings will be released publicly.

Ransom Notes Add New Layer of Concern

The case has grown more complex with a series of ransom messages sent to media outlets, including TMZ.

In one recent email, the sender claimed to know the identity of Nancy’s alleged captor and demanded a single Bitcoin, roughly $65,000, in exchange for information. When no payment was made, a second message followed, warning, “I am not being taken seriously.”

At the request of investigators, law enforcement has declined to share additional language from that communication.

Earlier messages reportedly sought millions in cryptocurrency from the Guthrie family. Authorities have not confirmed whether any of the ransom notes are legitimate, and investigators continue to treat them as part of the broader inquiry.

What We Know About the Suspect So Far

According to Fox News, Federal officials describe the man seen outside Nancy’s home as approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build.

In the footage, his face is concealed by a black ski mask. He appears dressed in dark clothing and is wearing black gloves. Investigators also noted that he carried a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack, model 25.

Several individuals have been questioned in connection with the case, but all have since been released. No arrests have been made.

As DNA testing continues and leads are evaluated, one theory now gaining traction is that the crime may not have been a planned kidnapping at all.

For Nancy’s family and the Tucson community, that possibility carries a fragile but powerful thread of hope.
