Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie, was likely “harmed” when she was taken from her home outside of Tucson, Arizona, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
“[Nanos] would not tell us the extent of those injuries,” NBC News reporter Liz Kreutz said in a special report on Monday, February 2. “I was just in the neighborhood where this happened with some members of the community driving around with a photo of Nancy, desperately trying to find anyone who may have seen her.”
Nancy Guthrie Is Without Life-Saving Medication
Authorities are calling the search for the 84-year-old a “race against time,” as she is without her life-saving medication.
“From what the family has told us and everything we have learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards,” Nanos told NBC News. “We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that is how this investigation is moving.”
He continued, “Look, if she is alive right now, her meds are vital. I can’t stress that enough, you know. I has been better than 24 hours, and the family tells us, if she doesn’t have those meds, it could be fatal.”
Nanos went on to confirm that Guthrie was believed to have been abducted from her bed.
“I can’t think of the last time where, in the middle of the night, in someone’s bed, an 84-year-old woman disappeared on us,” he continued. “That’s a challenge for us. We just want her back.”
Nancy Guthrie’s Cognitive State Revealed
The mother of the beloved “Today” host was last seen Saturday evening at her home. She was reported missing around noon on Sunday, February 1, after a friend noticed she had missed church that morning.
After reaching out to Guthrie’s children, they visited her home and “did some searching and realized, ‘We need some help,’ and they called 911.”
Despite needing daily medication, Nanos explained that Guthrie’s disappearance is “not dementia-related.”
“She’s very alert, of good, sound mind — just some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around,: Nanos said during a Monday press conference, calling her “sharp as a tack.”
The Guthrie family released a statement thanking law enforcement and fans for their love and support.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the statement, which was shared on the “Today” show read. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
