It is a deeply distressing moment for the Guthrie family as “Today” host Savannah Guthrie’s mother has been reported missing in southern Arizona, triggering an urgent search by local authorities.
As per details shared by TMZ, Pima County officials said Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished under what they described as ‘concerning circumstances‘, with both air and ground teams now deployed in the search.
Mother of ‘Today’ Anchor Reported Missing in Tucson Area
ABC15 reported that, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night near her home in the Tucson area.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said she was last seen at her residence between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue.
TMZ reported that a family member contacted 911 around noon on Sunday to report her missing.
Deputies later confirmed that Guthrie has been classified as a missing vulnerable adult due to her age, making her swift recovery a priority.
Authorities Cite ‘Concerning Circumstances’ at Residence
As per a TMZ report, during a briefing, Sheriff Nanos said investigators found what he described as disturbing or concerning conditions at the home, prompting homicide detectives to assist.
Authorities stressed that the case is being handled as a search and rescue operation, though investigators have not ruled out the possibility of foul play as the search continues.
Search Efforts Expand Across Pima County: Here’s How To Help
Search crews are sweeping the area around Guthrie’s home, including the Catalina Foothills near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue. Officials said both air and ground units are involved as deputies work to find her as quickly as possible.
As per ABC15, the sheriff’s department said it remains unclear what clothing Guthrie may have been wearing when she was last seen.
As per a report in 12News, Nanos said, “I don’t need to tell you, this is very concerning to us. We don’t typically get the sheriffs out at a scene like this.”
Nancy Guthrie is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
Pima County sheriff’s deputies are urging anyone with information about her location to call 911 immediately, noting that even small details could be critical.
As the search continues, officials say their priority remains finding Guthrie and ensuring her safety as her family awaits answers. More details can be found here.
Savannah Guthrie’s Birthday Tribute Highlighted a Deeply Close Bond With Her Mother
GettySavannah Guthrie previously offered a rare glimpse into her close relationship with her mother, Nancy Guthrie, in a birthday tribute that now carries added weight amid the ongoing search.
In Janaury 2025, The “Today” anchor shared a photo of her stylish lookalike mother on Instagram to mark Nancy’s 83rd birthday, celebrating the moment with a heartfelt caption: “A big cheers and happy birthday to this beauty. I love you, Mom.”
Despite living in different states, the mother and daughter have long remained deeply connected.
Nancy raised Savannah on her own after her husband, Charles, died while Savannah was in her senior year of high school. Savannah reflected on her mother’s strength and selflessness during an April 2022 conversation with co-host Jenna Bush Hager.
“My father died when I was entering my senior year in high school. I then lived at home all through college,” she shared, as per Today.
“We didn’t have the money to afford the dorm. And that was thing one, but the other was that my sister and I really felt like we should stick with my mom and not leave her alone.”
She recalled how difficult it was to eventually leave home for work. “But when I moved to Butte, Montana, this was it. And it was really hard for me to leave her.”
Savannah said her mother encouraged her to follow her own path, even when it meant being apart.
“And that’s when she said, ‘If you can’t leave me, then I didn’t do my job right, Savannah.’ She just gave me permission to go, you know?”
“She could have held onto me. It wouldn’t have taken very much,” Savannah continued. “If she said, ‘Well, you know, Savannah, maybe you could find something a little closer to home…’”
Instead, she said Nancy pushed her forward. “It’s not because she didn’t want me to stay. Of course, she wanted me to stay. But she’s like, ‘I’m not going to stand in the way of your dreams. I’m going to tell you, go go go go go.’”
Savannah is now a mother herself to two children, daughter Vale, 11, and son Charles, 9, whom she shares with her husband, Michael Feldman, a role she has often said deepened her appreciation for her mother’s sacrifices.
Savannah Guthrie, a co-anchor on NBC’s “Today,” has not publicly commented on the situation.
Our hearts are with the Guthrie family, and we hope Nancy is found safe very soon.
