Authorities Detail ‘Very Concerning’ Findings
As messages of support continued to pour in, authorities shared further details about the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
The 84-year-old went missing over the weekend, a case officials now describe as increasingly serious.
As per local reports, Arizona officials said the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have raised significant concern. While the case is still being handled as a search-and-rescue, a homicide team has been brought in to assist.
Speaking during a press conference on Sunday, February 1, Chris Nanos said the family told investigators that Nancy does not have any cognitive impairments.
“She’s very alert, of good, sound mind — just some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around,” Nanos said, according to NBC.
He explained that what investigators encountered at the home prompted the involvement of additional resources.
“We don’t typically get the sheriff out to a scene like this, but it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house,” he said.
“It’s not standard — typically our homicide team comes out when we have a homicide, a body. But simply by what the scene was telling us, we felt the need to bring the homicide team.”
Nanos stressed that despite the added investigative support, the case continues to be treated as a “search and rescue.”
Nanos added that the search has expanded to include drones, an airplane, a helicopter, volunteers, and search-and-rescue dogs provided by Customs and Border Protection as crews continue to comb the area for Guthrie.
