Patrick Muldoon remains closely tied to one moment on “Saved by the Bell” and his on-screen kiss with Tiffani Thiessen that changed the show’s most remembered and iconic scenes decades later.
Muldoon has died at age 57, but his work continues to live on through scenes that defined early teen television. He was widely known for his roles in “Saved by the Bell,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “Starship Troopers”, with his time at Bayside High still remembered by fans.
He appeared in a small run of episodes in 1991, playing character named, Jeff Hunter, the older manager at The Max, the group’s regular hangout place.
Kelly Kapowski, played by Tiffani Thiessen, meets Jeff through that setting, which places him just outside the Bayside student circle and gives the storyline a slightly more mature tone compared to typical high school plots.
Their on-screen kiss quickly became one of the most talked-about moments in the show’s run. It marked a clear shift in Kelly’s story as she stepped away from her long-running relationship with Zack Morris and explored something new.
Muldoon later reflected on how deeply that moment stayed with audiences. “People are not happy with me still,” he said on the latest episode of Tori Spelling’s MisSPELLING podcast.
But he also acknowledged its impact. “But it’s cool, because you did something that people remember.”
Patrick Muldoon and Tiffani Thiessen Kiss That Changed Saved by the Bell
NBCUniversalThe kiss between Jeff and Kelly did more than introduce a new romance. It pushed the show into a different direction at a time when its core formula was already well established.
“Saved by the Bell,” which aired from 1989 to 1993 on NBC, focused on a close group of high school friends at Bayside High. Most storylines stayed light and comedic, often resetting by the end of each episode. The Jeff and Kelly arc stood out because it stretched across multiple episodes and carried real consequences.
Jeff’s role as The Max manager gave him a natural connection to the group, but he was not a student. That difference created a noticeable contrast in how the relationship played out on screen. Kelly spent more time away from her usual group, and Zack’s reactions became a central part of the storyline.
The kiss marked the moment when that shift became visible. It confirmed that Kelly was choosing to move forward with Jeff, even as Zack struggled with the change. The storyline then built toward one of the show’s few extended arcs, ending when Kelly discovers Jeff being unfaithful, which closes the relationship and resets the central dynamic.
Muldoon understood how his role fit into that turning point.
“What I did to poor Kelly and Zack, so they are obviously a beloved couple, you know pop-culture couple, and I didn’t know at the time,” he said in a 2020 interview on the Saved by Nostalgia podcast.
“But I was doing a really bad thing. But can you blame me? I mean Kelly Kapowski is a beautiful girl,” he added.
He also explained the intent behind the storyline. “I was just trying to spice up their relationship,” he said on misSPELLING.
Patrick Muldoon’s ‘Saved by the Bell’ Kiss Still Iconic
GettyMuldoon’s role was brief, but the response never faded.
He said he still hears from viewers about that storyline decades later. “There’s no week that goes by that I don’t get… one to three messages on Instagram,” he shared on misSPELLING.
Many of those messages point back to that same moment. “You ruined my childhood!” he said, repeating what fans often tell him.
Muldoon always took that reaction in stride and recognized what it meant for his career. “I did it for Kelly and Zack. So Zack sees how valuable Kelly is,” he said on misSPELLING podcast .
The storyline also gave Kelly a rare independent arc within the series. Instead of staying in one relationship, she made a different choice, even if it did not last. That added depth to a character who was often written as the center of attention without major conflict.
Patrick Muldoon built a long career across television and film, but for many viewers, one scene stands out. That kiss between Jeff and Kelly remains a defining moment, one that continues to connect with audiences and keep his work alive.
