Ewan McGregor has recently made it clear that he is more than happy to return to a galaxy far, far away to portray Obi-Wan Kenobi once again. However, it seems that Disney doesn’t share the same enthusiasm for bringing back the Jedi Master.
Four years ago, McGregor was brought back to the franchise to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022 for the miniseries “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” In the show, he reprised the role he had played in the prequel trilogy almost two decades previously. The story follows the Jedi Master following the events of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” and bridges the gap between the prequel and original trilogies.
Now, McGregor has explained how he wants to explore more of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story and make another comeback – but he will first have to convince Disney to greenlight new projects.
Ewan McGregor Wants to Explore Obi-Wan’s Missing Years
Now, the 55-year-old actor has revealed just how committed he is to returning. However, he also acknowledged that Disney is seemingly not yet ready or willing to move forward with a “Star Wars” project featuring McGregor. That’s despite the positive reception to the miniseries.
“I’m ready whenever they are,” McGregor told E! News. “They just seem to not be ready, but I’m up for it.”
McGregor went even further, saying he wants to “spend the rest of my career” exploring the missing years of Obi-Wan’s life.
McGregor also feels like “Obi-Wan Kenobi ended in a way that leaves open a lot of scope for future projects.
The Disney+ series concluded with Obi-Wan deciding to stop watching Luke Skywalker so closely and leave the young boy to grow up with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, free of his influence. Obi-Wan then encountered the Force ghost of his former Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, played by “Star Wars” veteran Liam Neeson.
He said, “At the end of the ‘Obi-Wan’ series, I’m walking off into the desert and I’ve decided to leave. I’ve realized I can’t keep the pressure on Luke. I realized he has to have his own childhood, so I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. And I wander off… and Qui-Gon’s back. And we go off… but where are we going?”
The actor continued, “The next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness up in the mountains. What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories. Stories, you know, series or movies. We’ve got plenty of time; I’ve got 10 years before I am Alec Guinesses’ age. So come on, Disney!”
Hayden Christensen Is Also Interested in More ‘Star Wars’
Darth Vader actor Hayden Christensen has also expressed interest in reprising his role in future “Star Wars” content. The actor made a significant appearance opposite McGregor in “Ibo-Wan Kenobi” and reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker in the second season of “Ahsoka.”
“There’s a lot that we could still explore with Vader,” Christensen told ComicBook. “I think from where we left off, after Episode III, and everything that he has to reconcile after he’s trapped in this new version of himself, there’s just a lot of very rich stories that we could still tell.”
Another season of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” could potentially provide another opportunity for Hayden Christensen to appear as Anakin Skywalker or Darth Vader. Fans would certainly be happy to see McGregor and Christensen staging another Obi-Wan and Darth Vader lightsaber duel.
