Mel Owens, the 66 year old star of “The Golden Bachelor,” is in the hot seat this week. In week two, the remaining women swap roses for roast jokes as they take turns poking fun at the Bachelor during a group date.
Owens first sparked controversy back in June when he boldly declared on a podcast that he would be “cutting” any women over 60. That didn’t exactly score him any points with fans or the 23 contestants, ages 58 to 77, who wasted no time calling him out during the premiere. Now, the women are getting the last laugh.
Mel Owens’ Comments Come Back to Haunt Him During a Group Date Roast
ABCMel Owens is getting roasted instead of romanced on “The Golden Bachelor.” On the Oct. 1 episode, Owens took the remaining women on a group date to the historic Bellwether Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Once there, the women participated in a “no-holds-barred comedy roast,” and the woman with the funniest joke received a coveted one-on-one date with him, according to ABC.
In a teaser for the episode shared by “The Golden Bachelor” on Instagram, Comedian Jared Freid hosted the roast and kicked off the night with a jab at Owens’ June comments. “I’m Jared Freid, I’m very excited to be here. We’re gonna roast Mel! I’m 40, I’m the age Mel wishes you were,” he jokingly said.
Owens braced himself for even more jabs from the women, with Monica Brewer, 62, taking the stage and stating, “Mel, you’re like a classic car — you don’t go over 60.” There was also Cheryl Steele, 66, who didn’t hold back when she said, “You remind me of a Detroit-style pizza — cheesy and square,” which not only poked fun at Owens, but also referenced his upbringing in the Motor City.
Terri Alani, 71, brought her puppet pal Carly on stage and this time took a jab at Owens’ choice of footwear, “I have better shoes than you and I don’t even walk!”
Thankfully, Owens took the roasting like a pro.
Owens Profusely Apologized During the Premiere
GettyDuring the season 2 premiere of “The Golden Bachelor,” the show wasted no time speaking out about Owens’ controversial June comments about “cutting” women older than 60. In fact, the show opened with Owens looking back at his disparaging remarks and heavily apologizing.
“I’m excited to meet the women, but I’m nervous they’re going to have misconceptions about me,” Owens is heard stating. “I messed up. I was wrong. I replay it in my head a lot. I have regrets. I’m sorry for everything I said in the podcast. I know what a lot of people are thinking about me but that’s not who I am.”
Later, Owens got grilled by many of the contestants when they stepped out of the limo, including getting slapped in the face by a puppet for what he said.
When the women were all together in the mansion, Owens again took the time to apologize for his remarks. All of the ladies accepted his apology because it felt sincere.
