Kate Middleton returned to royal duty with a striking new look that left fans drawing comparisons to Princess Diana. On September 4, the Princess of Wales, 43, joined Prince William, also 43, for their first joint engagement after the summer break. The couple visited the newly transformed gardens at London’s Natural History Museum, where Kate debuted her blondest hair yet.

Letting her hair fall in loose waves with a side part and her signature blowout, Kate highlighted her sun-kissed strands, now reaching the middle of her back, her longest and lightest style so far.

Speculation about a lighter hue first began on Aug. 24, when cameras caught Kate driving to church near Balmoral Castle in Scotland with William and their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. Sunlight captured her golden tones, sparking a buzz of a new style shift.

By comparison, during her appearance at Wimbledon in July, Kate’s hair was a richer chestnut shade. Thursday’s outing confirmed that she has embraced a sun-kissed blonde look for fall.

A Nostalgic Look That Evokes Princess Diana

The new style has drawn comparisons to Princess Diana, who also famously experimented with brighter blonde shades during her time as a royal.

Diana’s soft, timeless cuts became defining moments of her legacy, and Kate’s latest transformation carries echoes of that same elegance.

Just as Diana once set beauty trends for a generation, Kate continues to inspire fans with her modern yet classic approach to royal fashion and beauty.

The Princess of Wales has long been known for her hair, often called her “crown.” Over the years, she has tried short layers, curtain bangs, and sunny highlights. In 2017, she even donated seven inches of hair to the Little Princess Trust charity, which provides wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

During a January 2024 hospital visit, Kate candidly shared that she had not used a cold cap during her chemotherapy, reflecting on how difficult it would have been to lose her hair.

“For her to lose her hair, which is so iconic, would have been awful,” said patient Katherine Field, recalling their conversation, as per People.

Balancing Royal Duties With Family & Recovery

Kate’s return to public duty also comes as the Wales family adjusts back to routine. The September outing took place just one day after her children returned to school. Over the summer, Kate, William, and their three kids spent quiet time together largely out of the public eye.

Despite her recent health battles, Kate continues to balance royal engagements with family life, a balance Diana once sought as well. Both women, in their own eras, have utilized their style, from hair to fashion, as a means to connect with people and demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges.
