Kate Middleton took a prominent place beside Queen Camilla during one of the royal family’s most solemn annual appearances.
The Princess of Wales joined the Queen on the central balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office overlooking the Cenotaph in London for Remembrance Sunday on November 8.
Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla’s appearance drew attention because the two senior royal women stood together as King Charles and Prince William took part in the wreath-laying ceremony below.
The moment also marked another high-profile public appearance for Kate, who has steadily returned to major royal duties following her cancer treatment.
Kate Middleton Stood Beside Queen Camilla At The Cenotaph

Kate, 44, watched the National Service of Remembrance alongside Camilla from the balcony overlooking Whitehall. The annual ceremony honors British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who died in the two world wars and later conflicts.
According to People, Kate has attended Remembrance Sunday every year since marrying Prince William and joining the royal family in 2011. That streak continued even during 2024, when she was undergoing cancer treatment and had dramatically reduced her public schedule.
This year, Kate and Camilla occupied the center balcony, while other members of the royal family watched from nearby balconies. King Charles led the nation in a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. before laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. Prince William also laid a wreath during the ceremony.
Around 10,000 veterans were expected to participate in the Royal British Legion’s march past the Cenotaph, according to the U.K. government.
Kate’s Prominent Position Did Not Mean She Replaced Camilla

Kate’s position beside the Queen was visually significant, but it did not represent any formal change in royal hierarchy. Camilla was present throughout the service, and a wreath was laid on her behalf during the ceremony.
The Princess of Wales’ prominent placement instead reflected her position as one of the monarchy’s most senior working royals and the wife of Prince William, the heir to the throne. Kate and Camilla have also appeared side by side at previous Remembrance Sunday services.
Their appearance together this year comes as Kate continues taking on more prominent engagements following a period when her health forced her to step away from much of public life. Her return has been gradual rather than immediate, making major ceremonial events such as Remembrance Sunday especially closely watched.
Kate Paid Tribute Through Her Outfit

Kate followed royal remembrance tradition by wearing black for the occasion. She wore a black Catherine Walker coat and a Jane Taylor hat, while also choosing several pieces of jewelry with personal significance.
The Princess of Wales wore Princess Diana’s Collingwood pearl drop earrings. This continues her long history of incorporating pieces associated with her late mother-in-law into major royal appearances.
She also wore an HMS Glasgow brooch and three red poppies. The poppy has been used as a symbol of remembrance in Britain and across the Commonwealth for more than a century. Kate has regularly worn three poppies at Remembrance Sunday events.
One widely reported explanation for her choice is that the three flowers honor three of her great-grandmother’s brothers, Maurice, Lionel and Francis, who died during World War I.
The Palace has not publicly confirmed a specific meaning behind the number of poppies Kate wears. Whatever the reason, the flowers have become a recognizable part of her Remembrance Sunday appearances.
The Royal Family Had Gathered The Night Before

Kate’s appearance beside Camilla followed another major royal gathering less than 24 hours earlier.
On Saturday, November 7, King Charles and Queen Camilla joined Prince William and Kate at the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence were also among the royals in attendance.
At that event, Kate wore an Alessandra Rich dress, the Irish Guards regimental brooch and earrings that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II, according to ITV News. The back-to-back appearances placed Kate at the center of one of the monarchy’s most important weekends of the year.
Remembrance Sunday Remains An Important Royal Duty

Remembrance Sunday is among the most significant ceremonial events on the royal calendar. The monarch traditionally leads the country in remembering those who died in military service, while senior members of the royal family join government officials, military representatives and veterans at the Cenotaph.
The royal family describes the annual event as the focal point of the nation’s tribute to those who died in world wars and later conflicts. For Kate, it has also become one of the most consistent public engagements of her royal life.
She has continued attending through changes within the monarchy, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II and Charles’ accession to the throne. She also maintained the tradition during one of the most difficult periods of her own public life in 2024.
That history is part of what made her latest appearance beside Camilla noteworthy. The image did not signal that Kate had taken the Queen’s place. Instead, it showed two of the royal family’s most senior women standing together during one of Britain’s most important national commemorations.
And as Kate continues rebuilding her public schedule, her prominent place beside Queen Camilla offered another visible sign of how central she remains to the monarchy’s biggest occasions.
