John-David Duggar’s In-Laws (The Burnett Family): 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Ever since the Duggar family rose to fame on TLC in 2008, viewers have watched Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s large family continue to grow through marriages, children, and new additions to the extended family tree. Over the years, fans have also become curious about the families connected to the Duggars through their children’s spouses.

One branch of the Duggar extended family that viewers were introduced to through “Counting On” is the Burnett family, following John-David Duggar’s marriage to Abbie Burnett. While Abbie became known to fans through her relationship with John-David, her family also shares a large family dynamic and strong faith-centered background that many Duggar fans find familiar.

With that in mind, here are five fast facts to know about the Burnett family in another edition of Duggar in-laws explained.


1. John-David Duggar Married Into the Burnett Family in 2018

The third child and second son of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, John-David, was the eighth Duggar sibling to get married. He married into the Burnett family when he tied the knot with Abbie Burnett on November 3, 2018. The couple exchanged vows at the First Baptist Church in Ada, Oklahoma. John-David was 28, and Abbie was 26 at their wedding.

A number of the Duggar siblings and extended family were asked to be in John-David and Abbie’s bridal party. John-David had asked his younger brother, Joseph Duggar, to serve as his best man. He also had his older brother, Josh Duggar, and his brother-in-law, Austin Forsyth, serve as his groomsmen. Abbie also asked John-David’s twin sister, Jana Duggar Wissmann, to serve as one of her bridesmaids.


2. John-David Duggar’s Father-In-Law Is Johnny Burnett

When John-David Duggar married his wife, Abbie, he gained Johnny Burnett as a father-in-law. Johnny Burnett was born on July 3, 1958. He served as the officiant at his daughter Abbie’s wedding to John-David, where he appeared on the Duggar family reality show, “Counting On.”


3. John-David Duggar’s Mother-In-Law Is Cheryl Burnett

When John-David married Abbie, he also gained Cheryl Burnett as his mother-in-law. Cheryl was born on July 28, 1959. She married her husband, Johnny, on May 2, 1981. Like her husband, Cheryl was also featured on “Counting On” during John-David and Abbie’s wedding.


4. Johnny and Cheryl Burnett Share 8 Children

John-David Duggar’s in-laws have eight children, with three sons and five daughters. Abbie Duggar is Johnny and Cheryl’s fourth child and second daughter.

Like Michelle Duggar, Cheryl has also given birth to fraternal twins. While Michelle gave birth to two sets, John-David and Jana, in 1990, and then, Jed and Jeremiah, in 1998, Cheryl gave birth to one set of twins, Maggie and Carinna, in 1996.

In birth order, the Burnett siblings include: John-Clay Burnett (1986), Hannah Burnett Dornink (1988), Caleb Burnett (1990), Abbie Burnett Duggar (1992), Charity Burnett Werden (1994), Maggie Burnett Becerra Nino (1996), Carinna Burnett Penn (1996), and Benjamin Burnett (2000).


5. Johnny and Cheryl Burnett Have Over 20 Grandkids and Counting

    All eight of the Burnett siblings are married, and all but one have children of their own. As a result, Johnny and Cheryl Burnett already have over 20 grandkids and counting.

    The Burnetts share three of their grandchildren with Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. John-David and Abbie welcomed their first child, Grace “Gracie” Annette Duggar, into the world in January 2020. Her birth was featured on “Counting On.”

    Since filming wrapped for the family’s reality TV show, John-David and Abbie have welcomed two more children. The couple welcomed their second child and first son, Charlie Duggar, in September 2022. In January 2026, they welcomed their third child and second daughter. John-David and Abbie announced their newest addition’s arrival on Instagram. However, they have yet to publicly release her name.

    From their large family structure to their growing number of grandchildren, the Burnetts have become another notable branch of the Duggar extended family since John-David and Abbie married in 2018.
